Mathew Schoff, Cheryl Paschen, Kimberly Hurley, Freeman Spelts, Tracey Gaideski, and Timothy Clark were arrested Friday, April 15th, after police found three active methamphetamine labs run by individuals at the Holloway Motel. The six plead not guilty and sought public defenders after appearing for initial hearings this week in Starke Circuit Court. Bond has been set at $50,000 each. The Holloway Motel was condemned as a result of meth lab activity.

A Starke County jury found John Brooke guilty of six of the seven counts against him: Conspiracy to Commit Armed Robbery, Intimidation, Possession and Manufacturing of a Destructive Device, Resisting Law Enforcement, Unlawful Use of Body Armor, and Assisting a Criminal. The jury found him not guilty of the count of Possession of a Destructive Device. Sentencing is scheduled for May 12th at 10:00 a.m. in Starke Circuit Court.

The Starke County Commissioners met with HJ Umbaugh and Associates and RQAW last week to go over a few capital projects at the county facilities including the jail roof and the Courthouse elevator. A slight tax increase is being discussed to repay any money that may be borrowed for the projects.
Students from the three Starke County schools were able to see Shakespeare’s Macbeth Tuesday at the North-San Pierre High School Auditorium. The play was performed by professional actors from the Shakespeare Theatre in Chicago’s Navy Pier. Continue reading

Representatives from JW Hicks proposed a plant expansion to the Knox City Council at the Council’s recent meeting. A 110,000 square foot addition is planned.

Sam Frain has been named the second district acting Republican Party Chairman. He is finishing the term of Joyce Smith who passed away Wednesday. A caucus will be held in April to permanently fill the vacancy and Frain is expected to be a candidate for the position.
The Eastern Pulaski School Board may eliminate the Driver’s Training course from its curriculum. While most school corporations offer the class in the summer and through private contractors, Eastern Pulaski offers it as an elective class during the school year. Continue reading

Andrew Glover of Knox was arrested Saturday, March 5th after police were called to his residence in reference to a domestic violence incident. Glover engaged in a standoff with police and was eventually taken into custody by a SWAT team. He has preliminary charges of Criminal Confinement, Domestic Battery in the Presence of a Minor Child with a Prior, Intimidation, Battery and Resisting Law Enforcement.
Knox Community School Board President Harold Welter says that traditional public schools and charter schools are not yet on a level playing field and when that gets ironed out, he doesn’t see a problem with the competition between the two. The says the Knox staff is full of competitors and will do what they can to draw students to their particular class. He also said that the Knox Federation of Teachers and the School Board have always had positive collective bargaining sessions when it comes to discussing salaries and benefits.
Forensic Fluids Laboratories in Kalamazoo, Michigan was contracted by the Starke County Commissioners to conduct oral fluid drug tests on new County employees and 10 percent of current employees.
Lisa Owens, who was convicted of shooting her husband Jeff in the shower in their home in Knox, was featured on the “Breaking Down the Bars” program on the Oprah Winfrey Network Tuesday night.
Starke County Sheriff Oscar Cowen informed the Starke County Commissioners that the furnace and air conditioning unit is going out at the Starke County Jail, the roof needs replaced and a water pipe leak caused damage to the lower floor of the Jail where the Prosecutor’s Office is located.
23 people charged with Attending an Animal Fight Contest plead Guilty in Knox City Court Monday evening. 7 others who charged with the same charge plead not guilty. 31 other defendants appeared before Judge Charles Hasnerl Wednesday afternoon.
Adam Lolmaugh of Plymouth was arrested on a charge of burglary after he allegedly confessed to police that he was involved in the act of burglary at People’s Drug Store on February 16th.
Starke County Courthouse Custodian, Carl Goodrich, says the Courthouse elevator will soon be in the state of repair. The hydraulic system has failed and other repairs will need to be done to bring the elevator up to code.
The British Broadcasting Corporation visited Knox this week to do a story about time zones. They visited the WKVI studios to film how broadcasting to listeners in two time zones often causes confusion.

76 individuals were arrested last Saturday after police received an anonymous tip of an illegal cock fighting operation at a residence in North Judson. Eleven face felony charges of Animal Fighting Contest, while others face a misdemeanor charge of Attending an Animal Fight Contest. Four of those charged with felonies remain on hold in the Starke County Jail as they have been identified as illegal immigrants.

A former Winamac woman was reunited with her baby after her husband took of with him December 22nd. Sandy Young is filing for divorce from her husband, Maurice Young, after the incident kept her away from her 10-month-old son, Jacob.
Tim and Tracey Moore will be moving into their new Habitat for Humanity home today in Winamac. The 1,050 square foot home was built in six months by many volunteers for the Moore family. Continue reading

The Lincoln Township Fire Department in Fish Lake received an Assistance to Firefighters Grant for $54,480 for Operations and Safety.
Starke County Highway Superintendent Steve Siddall told the Starke County Commissioners that the Department received complaints about mailbox damage after the winter storm. Siddall also reported that more damage could be reported in Bass Lake and Koontz Lake when they start to push big piles of snow back on the right-of-ways.

Knox Mayor Rick Chambers notified the Knox City Council that the TIF Fund has grown to just over $151,000. The money can be used within the TIF District for redevelopment, public improvement projects, training, or making bond payments.
Center Township precincts in Starke County will consolidate for the 2011 Primary Election. Voters in the four precincts will vote at the Knox Community Center.
The Knox City Council will be working on a contract between the Knox-Center Township Fire Department to give Knox the authority to grant protection for Jackson Township.
Judge Charles Hasnerl has announced his campaign for re-election to the Knox City Court in the 2011 Municipal Election. Hasnerl has served as Knox City Court Judge since 1996.

Residents in the Kankakee Valley dug out after 12+ inches of snow fell in a blizzard that swept through a big portion of the United States. States of emergency were declared in 17 counties in Indiana. Starke and Pulaski County Highway Departments struggled to keep roads open. The General Assembly canceled Tuesday’s session and Committees did not meet on Wednesday due to the weather.

The Starke County Commissioners had a brief discussion last week on added security at the Starke County Courthouse. Employment of extra officers to man a metal detector and if one were installed, it would mean only one entrance into the Courthouse could be used as all door couldn’t be provided with a detector.
The Knox Community School Board approved base bids for the high school renovation project. The bid went to Brown and Brown Contractors for $1,567,000.

Residents of Koontz Lake and surrounding communities turned out last Saturday to honor 50 year Koontz Lake firefighter Robert “Lynn” Fraine.
The Starke County Health Board is considering combining the Environmentalist position with the Food Inspector’s duties. Meanwhile, Starke County Commissioner Jennifer Davis resigned from the seat she was named to on the Starke County Health Board.
Christina Rotering was honored before the Oregon-Davis girls basketball game last Saturday night. Christina is battling a form on non-Hodgskin’s Lymphoma.
The Starke County Commissioners discussed the new burn ordinance at its meeting this week. Questions were fielded concerning enforcement of the new ordinance and if leaf and natural wood burning would be permitted.
Jeffrey Singleton, Sr., Jeffrey Singleton, Jr. and Sandra Singleton of Knox were arrested on Friday, January 14th, on methamphetamine related charges. Police say a meth lab was found in the Singleton’s garage and paraphernalia was found in the residence.

Kimberly Hitchens and John Brooke, both reportedly involved in the event surrounding a shootout with police at Bass Lake in February 2010, will be tried in a joint trial beginning February 21st.
It was announced this week that Lisa Owens, who shot and killed her husband Jeff in 2001 and who plead guilty to Voluntary Manslaughter, could be released from the Rockville Correctional Facility as early as May of this year. She was sentenced to serve 40 years in prison. She is also scheduled to appear on the Oprah Winfrey Network program “Breaking down the Bars” to air sometime this year. Continue reading

Several bones that were returned to the Army in 1988 have been positively identified. They belong to Andy Howes, the young soldier from Knox who was MIA for over four decades after the helicopter he was in went down in Vietnam. Howes’ MIA bracelet is displayed in a case in the Knox Community School Board meeting room.
The new year brought new appointments to government boards. Dan Bridegroom was retained as President of the Starke County Commissioners, Mark Smith was retained as Starke County Council President, and Dan Anderson was retained as the President of the North Judson Town Board. Bob Howard was replaced as a member of the Starke County Health Board. Howard had served for 10 years on the board, 8 of them as President.
Amy Singleton of Knox gave birth to the first Starke County baby of 2011. Ireland Rose Furlong was born on Saturday, January 1st at 6:26 a.m. CT at the LaPorte Regional Health System, LaPorte Hospital. The first baby in Pulaski County, Katilyn Michelle Baker, arrived on Tuesday afternoon at Pulaski Memorial Hospital. Lisa Nicholson and Levi Baker of Star City are Katilyn’s parents.
The Indiana General Assembly began its legislative session this week. One of the issues that the legislators will focus on is the state’s rapidly increasing prison population.
The body of Robert L. Lemke, 82, of North Judson was found Wednesday morning in a wooded area by his home. Police believe he left home on foot sometime between the evening hours of Sunday, January 2nd and Tuesday, January 4th.
