Here is a look at some of the news that made the news in the Kankakee Valley this week:

Robert Singleton, Samuel Singleton, Amber Rose and Matthew Baker were arrested on Friday after officers from the Starke County Sheriff’s Department and the Knox City Police Department executed an arrest warrant at 415 N. State Road 23 in Knox.

Bridge #62, #9 and #51 that are now closed in Starke County are expected to see repairs early this spring and summer. 19 bridges are on a priority schedule in the county. Continue reading

Week in Review February 13th-17th, 2012

Here is a look at some of the news that made the news in the Kankakee Valley this week:

Tessa J. Haney and her two year old daughter, Jocelyn, were saved by Knox City Police Officer, Chad Dulin, and Knox-Center Township Firefighter, Wayne Noah, after they helped them from their overturned car that had crashed into a deep ditch filled with water on State Road 8.

The Family Dollar store in Culver was robbed at gunpoint late Saturday night. The Culver Police Department continues to search for the suspect.  Continue reading

Angela McDougal

Phillip Mullins and Angela McDougal were arrested Friday, February 3rd, after police executed an arrest warrant for Mullins. They were charged with several drug charges.

The West Central School Board received the tax rate for next year’s budget. The Board reduced the Capital Projects Fund by $80,000 to keep the rate close to last year’s rate. Continue reading

Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels

Governor Daniels signed the right to work bill into law Wednesday afternoon. Indiana is now the 23rd right to work state.

Tom Collins, a former Winamac resident and player for the Negro Baseball League team, Memphis Red Sox, died last week at the age of 100.

The Knox City Council discussed ideas surrounding the Knox downtown revitalization project. Continue reading

Eric Corey

Funeral services for the creator of the popular Turkey Tracks hunt for disabled hunters, Eric Corey, were held Sunday at the Knox Community Center. Hundreds attended the service.

Welding classes could be offered soon at the Knox Middle School. Knox Community School Superintendent A.J. Gappa is discussing the project with representatives from the Starke County Economic Development Foundation, SCILL Center, and the North Central Area Vocational program. Continue reading

Governor Mitch Daniels gives Spc. Robert Tauteris, Jr.'s Bronze Star Medal to Matthew Tauteris

A funeral service for Spc. Robert Tauteris, Jr. was held Sunday at the Braman and Bailey Funeral Home in North Judson. Hundreds of people attended the service, including Governor Mitch Daniels, Congressman Joe Donnelly and State Representative Nancy Dembowski.

The Starke County Commissioners learned that the Bass Lake Campground has year-round residents and they stated that they would like it to stay a campground and not a trailer park. Continue reading

Week in Review for January 9th-13th, 2012

Here is just some of the news that made the news in the Kankakee Valley this week.

Robert “Bobby” Tauteris Jr.

Robert Tauteris, Jr., 44 of Hamlet, died Thursday after a truck he was in struck a roadside bomb in Afghanistan. He died along with three other National Guard Soldiers from Indiana who were in the truck.

Jasper County Circuit Court Judge John Potter lifted the restraining order the Starke County Commissioners had against former Starke County Treasurer Linda Belork. She can not immediately return to office. A hearing regarding the financial discrepancies found in her office will need to be conducted first and that is scheduled for June 6th. Continue reading

Henry F. Schricker Library

Library bonds totaling $1.785 million have been sold to help pay for an expansion and remodeling project at the Henry F. Schricker Public Library. Library Director, Sheila Urwiler, said that she hopes the groundbreaking ceremony will take place in April.

A hiring freeze in Pulaski County has created problems in many county departments. Auditor Sheila Garling said she will discuss the issue with the Commissioners and Council to see if the freeze can be reclassified to allow department heads to hire the help they need. Continue reading

Knox CVS

Knox police continue to look for Jonathan Hummel who is a suspect in the Knox CVS armed robbery that occurred on Tuesday, December 20th. Nathan Hummel, the other suspect in the incident, appeared in Starke Circuit Court for his initial hearing this week and pleaded not guilty in Starke Circuit Court yesterday to charges of Dealing in Narcotic Drugs; Aiding, Inducing or Causing a Robbery; Resisting Law Enforcement; Criminal Mischief; and Attempting to Disarm a Police Officer.

Jonathan Hummel

Nathan Hummel was arrested Tuesday on charges of Armed Robbery, Criminal Mischief, Resisting Law Enforcement, Dealing a Controlled Substance and Disarming an Officer. He and Jonathan Hummel allegedly robbed the CVS in Knox Tuesday by knifepoint and stole several bottles filled with narcotics. Jonathan Hummel remains at large.  Continue reading

Yellow River

The Starke County Surveyor’s office recently received a $190,000 grant to help remove trees and logs from the Yellow River. Surveyor Dennis Estok said that he doesn’t believe that trees and logs have never been cleared from the river.

Starke County Library Director Sheila Urwiler said that e-books may be available in the county libraries in February or May. She doesn’t believe the e-books will completely replace printed books for about 15 or 20 years.  Continue reading

Kasey Clark was named the Interim Starke County Treasurer in a Democratic Caucus held Thursday night. Linda Belork’s attorney had filed a motion in Starke Circuit Court to halt the caucus this week, but Judge Kim Hall ruled that the caucus could proceed.

IU Health Starke Hospital will wait later in 2012 to contract with an ALS ambulance service.

Counterfeit $20 bills were found in the Starke County area. If you find any of these bills, contact the Starke County Sheriff’s Department at 772-3771. Continue reading

Traci Jacobs of Knox and Richard Warner of North Judson were arrested on Thursday, November 17th after one pot method meth labs were found at a residence in North Judson. They were charged with several drug possession charges. Jacobs was also arrested on active arrest warrants for Failure to Appear. Continue reading

The Pulaski County Prosecutor’s Office has filed two counts of Theft against Jennifer A. Wallace who was recently arrested after allegedly stealing tanning product inventory and cash from Ladybug Laundry and Tan in Winamac.

Dispatchers from the Starke County Sheriff’s Department and surrounding departments encourage you to remove batteries from old cell phones before giving them to children to play. This will help reduce accidental calls to 9-1-1 centers.  Continue reading

Week in Review for October 24th-28th, 2011

Shelby Thomas

Shelby Thomas plead not guilty in Starke Circuit court on Friday to three counts of Attempted Murder, four counts of Intimidation with a Deadly Weapon and three counts of Resisting Law Enforcement with a Deadly Weapon. He was arrested October 16th after an incident in Knox where he allegedly threatened a Knox man and three police officers.

IU Health Starke Hospital CEO Linda Satkoski said that the $2 million that will be used in a capital spending request approved by the Starke County Council will consist of making immediate needs of the hospital. Those needs include improving the overall look of the facility. Continue reading

Shelby Thomas, of North Judson, was arrested Sunday after police found he allegedly held a knife up to a person’s throat and threatened death. Thomas has preliminary charges of Intimidation with a Deadly Weapon, Attempted Murder and Resisting with a Deadly Weapon.

Week in Review for October 3rd-7th, 2011

Here is just some of the news that made the news in the Kankakee Valley this week:

IU Health Starke Hospital

Starke County officials heard a proposal from IU Health Starke Hospital regarding the purchase of the hospital facility, land and equipment from the County. No decision was made. IU Health Starke Hospital is asking the county to approve another $2 million in upgrades before the sale to IU Health LaPorte Hospital. Starke County is already committed to $7.4 million that the LaPorte facility inherited with the signing of the lease in 2006. If the hospital is sold, that money will be waived.
