Here is a look at some of the news that made the news in the Kankakee Valley this week.

47-year-old Debra Clemons of Francesville was arrested Thursday, July 12 after she was found to be intoxicated and her autistic son was found walking along U.S. 421 after midnight. A Pulaski County deputy walked alongside the boy on U.S. 421 until a family member could be contacted to pick up the boy. After the boy was picked up, the officer went to his home and found his intoxicated mother, Debra Clemons, where she told police that she was out looking for her son and didn’t know how he got out of the house. She was arrested on a preliminary charge of Neglect of a Dependent.  Continue reading

Week in Review for July 9th-13th, 2012

Here is a look at some of the news that made the news in the Kankakee Valley this week:

The Starke County Commissioners have decided to reinstate the burn ban due to the dry conditions and an increase in fire activity. Open burning of any kind is prohibited, except for grills. You may burn debris in a burn barrel with a one-quarter inch mesh top from dawn to dusk. This burn ban will be in effect until July 16th when the Starke County Commissioners and EMA Director Ted Bombagetti reevaluate the conditions. Continue reading

Week in Review for July 2nd-6th, 2012

Here is a look at some of the news that made the news in the Kankakee Valley this week:

The proposed golf cart ordinance in Marshall County will be discussed by the Commissioners in a public hearing setting on Monday, July 16th. No time has been set for the hearing, but the Commissioners will be meeting at 10:00 a.m. ET to go over regular business. There are a few residents upset with the ordinance that restricts the use of golf carts around the county’s lakes. The ordinance does not include use on any other roadway. The ordinance also requires a driver to have a driver’s license and proof insurance must be present at all time when operating a cart. Other provisions have also been set and will be discussed during the public hearing. Continue reading

Week in Review for June 25th-19th, 2012

Here is a look at some of the news that made the news in the Kankakee Valley this week.

Two fatal accidents were investigated in the Kankakee Valley area this week. On Monday, the Knox City Police Department responded to a two vehicle accident on U.S. 35 and John Street where the driver of a passenger vehicle hit a minivan head-on. The driver, 67-year-old Robert Freye, of Hamlet had a heart attack and crossed the center line and hit the minivan. He died of a torn aorta. The passenger in his vehicle, Mary Hightower, 63, of Hamlet, was badly injured in the accident and the driver of the minivan, Patrick McCarty, 39, of Knox sustained minor injuries in the accident. Two 16-year-old boys were killed in a single vehicle accident on 12 B Road, east of Olive Trail in Marshall County, Thursday night. Vincent Cody Poczik and Hunter Brandt of Plymouth were killed instantly when Poczik’s vehicle left the roadway, struck a guardrail and flipped end over end. The accident remains under investigation.  Continue reading

Week in Review for June 18th-22nd, 2012

Here is a look at some of the news that made the news in the Kankakee Valley this week:

A burn ban was enacted Monday in Pulaski County. The Commissioners are prohibiting open burning of any kind using conventional fuel such as wood or other combustible material, with the exception of grills. The burning of debris, such as timber or vegetation and recreational campfires, unless enclosed, is prohibited. You are also asked to not discharge any fireworks. This ban is in effect until Noon ET on Monday, June 25th when conditions will be reevaluated. The Starke County Commissioners have enacted a burn ban in the county which is in effect until July 2nd. Week in Review for June 11th-15th, 2012

Here is a look at some of the news that made the news in the Kankakee Valley this week:

A State Board of Accounts report has identified financial discrepancies in a special report for the Town of North Judson. Starke County Prosecutor Nicholas Bourff has confirmed that he received the report that alleges financial discrepancies that total $74,408 from a period of January 1st, 2010 and December 31st, 2011. The largest discrepancy was found in the cemetery lot sales category while other discrepancies were found in utility receipts, ordinance violation collections, police department receipts, and reimbursements that were not deposited intact. Former Clerk-Treasurer Connie Miller was asked to repay all of the funds, but has stated in a letter to the State Board of Accounts that she objects to any allegations or suggestions that she did any wrong for personal gain. She is confident that the discrepancies can be rectified. Continue reading

Gavin Wireman

A 27-year-old Medaryville man was arrested Saturday after allegedly robbing the Lake City Bank in Medaryville at gunpoint. A teller called the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department around 9:30 a.m. ET after the man robbed the bank. Officers gathered information in the incident and after an hour, they arrested Gavin Keith Wireman on a preliminary charge of Robbery. Police recovered the stolen money plus the alleged weapon used in the incident. Continue reading

Joshua Hunnicutt

Fugitive Joshua Hunnicutt turned himself into the Starke County Jail on Sunday. He had escaped from the facility on Wednesday, May 23rd by climbing the outside rec area wall. He reportedly told police that he turned himself in because he realized he would eventually be caught. He is currently being held in the Starke County Jail on his previous charge of possession of methamphetamine and a new charge of Escape as a Class C felony. Continue reading

Week in Review for May 21st-25th, 2012

Here is a look at some of the news that made the news in the Kankakee Valley this week.

Nathan Hummel

Jonathan Hummel and Nathan Hummel were sentenced in Starke Circuit Court on Thursday, May 17th. The pair were involved in an armed robbery incident in December. Jonathan Hummel was sentenced to 30-and-a-half years in the Department of Corrections as per a plea agreement. He pleaded guilty to charges of Dealing a Narcotic Drug; Robbery; Aiding, Inducing or Causing a Robbery; and Criminal Mischief. Nathan Hummel pleaded guilty to charges of Dealing a Narcotic Drug; Robbery; Aiding, Inducing or Causing a Robbery; and Disarming an Officer. He will serve 25 years in the Department of Corrections. They are both required to pay restitution in the amount of $2,900 for damages to a police squad car and $11,924 in restitution to the Knox CVS.  Continue reading

Week in Review for May 14th-18th, 2012

Here is a look at some of the news that made the news in the Kankakee Valley this week:

Members of the Starke County Council and Commissioners met in a public hearing to discuss authorizing the use of up to $50,000 in Save the hospital funds to be used to hire a consultant to evaluate IU Health Starke Hospital’s real and personal property in a possible hospital sale. A motion was made to allow that money to be spent on a consultant to evaluate the property, building and equipment as well as offer various options for the sale, but the motion died. The Council members will discuss the issue again during their regular meeting on May 21st at 5:00 p.m. Continue reading

Week in Review for May 7th-11th, 2012

Here is a look at some of the news that made the news in the Kankakee valley this week:

Tuesday’s Primary Election decided a few contested races in Starke, Pulaski and Marshall Counties. The Oregon-Davis School referendum question brought a lot of controversy in this Primary Election, but in the end, the referendum passed with 699 voters saying yes and 383 voting no. With the passage of this referendum, the Oregon and Davis Township taxpayers will pay a 19 cent increase on each $100 of assessed property value over a period of seven years.

Week in Review for April 30th-May 4th, 2012

Here is a look at some of the news that made the news in the Kankakee Valley this week:

Former Marshall County Commissioner, 82-year-old Donald Ferguson, of Plymouth, was killed in a semi truck/car accident late Sunday afternoon. Ferguson was attempting to turn onto Cedar Road off of U.S. 30 in Bourbon and a semi rear-ended the vehicle. Marshall County Coroner, Bill Cleavenger, said that Ferguson died of blunt force trauma and his wife, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was taken to St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Plymouth for her injuries. The accident remains under investigation.  Continue reading

David Hyatt will become the President of IU Health Starke Hospital after the current President, Linda Satkoski, moves to the LaPorte health system to assume the role of Chief Operating Officer. Thor Thordarson said that the announcement of an Interim President at IU Health Starke Hospital will not affect the plans of the hospital to the IU Health LaPorte Hospital. Thordarson said that the commitment has stayed strong and there are a number of things that have been implemented at the Starke facility that have been implemented at the LaPorte facility. He says the faith is there and IU Health Starke Hospital is on good financial footing.  Continue reading

Starke County Jail

Data collection will begin now to get the paperwork ready for construction, or renovation, of the Starke County Jail. The Starke County Jail Committee is looking for estimates to give to the public and all the information gathered will be used to assemble a proposal for a jail project. The data will be collected over a period of 60-90 days and all will be given to the Committee for review.  Continue reading

Oregon-Davis Jr./Sr. High School

Starke County Farm Bureau President Brad Lawrence told Oregon-Davis School Superintendent Dr. Steve Disney that the Farm Bureau is encouraging its members to vote with their conscience when it comes to the tax levy referendum on the May 8th ballot.

Robert "Ryan" Corbin

Knox High School gym teacher, Robert “Ryan” Corbin, was arrested Sunday after an alleged improper internet contact incident was reported by a parent. The Knox City Police Department investigated the call and subsequently arrested Corbin on two preliminary charges of Attempted Child Seduction, both Class D Felonies. Corbin is the Physical Education teacher at Knox High School and he is the varsity boys and girls swim coach. The Knox Community School Board suspended Corbin, with pay. Corbin hired an attorney, Nicholas T. Otis, from a law firm in LaPorte, to represent him. Continue reading

Nathan VanDerAa

Nathan VanDerAa, of Star City, was sentenced to 33 months in the Bureau of Prisons, with two years of supervised release following his plea of guilty to charges of Unlawful User of a Controlled Substance in Possession of a Firearm.

Ione Moore, who was known to some as Mrs. Republican, passed away Friday, March 23rd, at the age of 92.  Continue reading

Monterey Elementary School

Monterey Town Board President, Jim Fleury, asked the Culver Community School Board about what to do about the items on display at the Monterey Elementary School. A committee will tour the school and bring a list of items to be removed to the School Board for approval.

The Knox City Council is considering a request by Knox Mayor Rick Chambers to install security cameras at City Hall. Continue reading

Week in Review for March 12th-16th, 2012

A public informational meeting concerning the proposed property tax levy for Oregon-Davis Schools is scheduled for Tuesday, March 20th. Terry Minix, President of the Oregon-Davis Education Political Action Committee, said that discussion will be held concerning what will happen if the tax levy is approved or not approved.

Three homes have now been hooked up to the newly operational Koontz Lake Regional Sewer facilities. 938 connections have yet to be made which will take up to six months to complete. Continue reading

Conservation Keith Wildeman takes possession of the alligator found dead in Starke County

Jeff Brewer and Steve Brewer found a dead alligator in the Kankakee River in Starke County on Sunday. If anyone knows anything about this incident, call the Indiana Department of Natural Resources at 1-800-TIP-IDNR.

The Starke County Tourism Board reorganized with Julie Dessauer named President. John Hensler was named Vice President, Thom Morin, Secretary and Tabitha Dillner, Treasurer. Continue reading
