LaPorte County Courthouse Evacuated after Bomb Threat

 
 

A Michigan City man was arrested Wednesday after allegedly sending a bomb threat notice by mail to the LaPorte County clerk’s office.

The employee received a letter addressed to the clerk’s office delivered by the United States Postal Service. When she opened the envelope, she found a powdery substance and a letter, according to a news release. She immediately took the envelope and the contents to the courthouse security office.

The letter stated that explosives were located in or near the courthouse, as noted in the press release. With that, the courthouse was evacuated and a request was made for the assistance of the Michigan City Police Department, LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office, LaPorte County Hazardous Materials Team, Michigan City Fire Department and LaPorte County Emergency Management.

Public Comments to be Heard Today Concerning Operating Hours at Hamlet Post Office

A meeting will be held today at the Hamlet Town Hall to gather public comment on the United States Postal Service’s POST plan. The POST plan is a review process of certain Post Offices which includes the Hamlet facility.

Rural Post Offices May See Relief, Says USPS

Many of the 3700 rural post offices targeted for closure last year might get a reprieve. The United States Postal Service has come up with a new plan that could keep rural post offices open throughout the country.

The plan now is for the post offices to stay open with reduced hours. A post office typically open for eight hours a day could be reduced to only six, four, or even two hours a day. This announcement comes after a public outcry that overwhelmingly insisted the rural offices stay open. Some areas that are reduced to four- or two-hour days may still be considered village post offices where postal services are set up inside another business.

United States Postal Service to Consolidate Mail Processing Centers

The United States Postal System recently announced the consolidation of mail processing centers in several locations in the state, including Northern Indiana.

“These included moving the mail processing operations from South Bend to Fort Wayne, also moving the operations in Gary to the South Suburban facility in Illinois,” said Mary Dando, spokesperson for the United States Postal System in the Greater Indiana District.

Dando was asked when this will take effect.
