Union Mills Sponsors 31st Annual Mill Pond Fest Aug. 25-27

 

A golf cart rally at 6 p.m. tonight will kick off the 31st Annual Mill Pond Festival. Line up for the rally will take place in front of the clubhouse at 100 Mill Pond Road in Union Mills. Food vendors, craft booths and a beer garden will be open tonight, tomorrow and Sunday.

Saturday festivities start at 8 a.m. with the Lions Club 5K and skeet shoot pre-qualification. Skeet shoot finals are at 1.p.m. The parade will start at the fire station and commence at 10 a.m. followed by an opening ceremony at 10:30 a.m. Canoe rides and games will be available and the beer garden opens at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Two-County Pursuit Lands Union Mills Woman in Jail

 
 

A Union Mills woman faces a felony charge after initiating a pursuit with police that spanned two counties.

The incident started around 3:15 p.m. CT Tuesday afternoon when LaPorte County Sheriff’s Officers were notified of a vehicle involved in a hit and run and headed into the county from St. Joseph County. The vehicle driven by 56-year-old Kim Echterling failed to stop on State Road 2 at County Road 300 East after LaPorte County Captain Dave Pflughaupt attempted to end the pursuit. The vehicle continued into the City of LaPorte.

Road Rage Possibly To Blame For Fatal LaPorte County Crash

 
 

Authorities in LaPorte County say road rage may have been a factor in a fatal two-vehicle Sunday night crash near Union Mills. Michael Edwards, 38, of LaPorte, died en route to a medical helicopter that had been summoned to the crash site in the 8500 block of County Road 600 West. The second driver, Bryan Baker, 21, of Hobart, was treated at IU Health LaPorte Hospital and released. Continue reading

Bullet Found Inside South Central High School Locker Room

 
 

A .22 caliber bullet was found in the girls PE locker room at South Central High School, which caused a lockdown of the school at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday.

The bullet was placed into the custody of a staff member, and the school’s resource officer was notified. A search ensued. Members of the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department responded to the school and served as security as staff members looked through every student locker. The PE lockers were also thoroughly searched. Nothing of a suspicious nature was located. The lockdown was lifted after two hours.

One-Time Energy Assistance Available to Struggling Citizens

$Applications for the Energy Assistance Program can still be submitted for a one-time benefit on electric and heating bills. North Central Community Action Agencies, Pulaski County Human Services, and Community Services of Starke County began taking applications for LaPorte, Pulaski and Starke residents in November. Applications will continue to be accepted until all funds are obligated.
