Back in October, board members passed a resolution to make the change in the board’s organizational plan. A community leader will be laid to rest today. Mary J. Bendt, 72, of Knox founded the annual WoodStarke Festival, celebrated annually in Wythogan Park. 2001: Starke County Commissioners Discuss New Jail

After months of avoiding the issue, the Starke County Commissioners have publicly acknowledged a new jail is needed to relieve ongoing overcrowded conditions. That may not surprise anyone who has followed the problems at the jail over the past couple of years.

That was the opening sentence to an article in The Leader exactly 10 years ago today. In that same article, the Commissioners were proposing a joint meeting with the Council to discuss building a criminal justice center.

Random Act of Kindness Event Scheduled for June 12th

The annual Random Act of Kindness event will be held June 12th. Do you know of someone who should be recognized for a single event or continued kindness efforts? If you do, submit them to Darla Cook at the Knox Mayor’s office. The sooner she gets your nomination, the sooner she can invite your nominee to the June 12th celebration. Starke County Commissioners Discuss Burn Ordinance at Recent Meeting

When is a burn ban, not a burn ban? According to the Starke County Commissioners, it’s when a local ordinance is updated that would spell out the penalties for violations. Commission President, Dan Bridegroom, said this week that when the burn ordinance was discussed it came out as meaning a “burn-ban” and that is not what the commission wanted to convey to the public.

“I think the biggest misconception right away was the word ‘ban’ was in everything they read,” said Commission President, Dan Bridegroom. “As soon as I would explain to the people that called me and talked to me and stopped me, it’s not a ban, then they were ok. They were ok almost immediately to know that they can still burn their leaves and burn their brush. I guess that part of the blame should fall back on us in that we didn’t get it out, specifically, what we were looking at.”

Prominent Winamac Citizen Passes Away

Beverly Powers, 72, of Winamac, passed away Sunday in Memorial Hospital in South Bend. Beverly, at one time, was in our profession writing first for The Leader and then the Pulaski County Journal. Her column “From My Little Corner of the Room” was a “ must read” of all who read the Journal regularly.  She was involved with scores of organizations and in her lifetime, participated in many worthwhile causes in her community.

Our sincere sympathy goes out to the entire family.
