Hamlet Town Council Approves Purchase of Wastewater Testing Equipment, Snowblower

The Town of Hamlet is upgrading some of its equipment. The town council Wednesday approved the purchase of a DR 3900 spectrophotometer for the town’s wastewater plant for about $4,600. Water and Street Superintendent Fred Rowe said its main purpose will be to test for ammonia. “It is expensive now, but it’ll save you money in the long run,” he said.

Relay for Life of Starke County to Feature Silent Auction, Kids Games and More

Join the Relay for Life of Starke County this Saturday to honor cancer survivors and their caregivers and to commemorate loved ones who have passed away.

From noon until midnight, Relayers will gather at the Starke County Fairgrounds in Hamlet to raise awareness while having fun in the process. This year’s theme is “Toonin’ Out Cancer.”

Yellowstone Trail Fest Organizers Schedule Educational Visit with Skeeter the Clown

Property Taxes Will Increase to Build Hamlet Fire Station

Davis Township property owners who live outside the Hamlet town limits will see a property tax increase of about 14-cents per $100 of assessed valuation to pay for the new 9,300 square foot, $750,000 fire station. That’s an estimate provided by officials with accounting firm Umbaugh and Associates during Monday’s public hearing on the project. Continue reading

Miss Yellowstone Pageant Set for Aug. 16

pageantThe Yellowstone Trail Festival is coming up and a pageant to determine the festival’s queen is set for Saturday, Aug. 16 during the festival.

Four age divisions will be crowned: Tiny Miss for girls ages 5 to 8, Little Miss for girls ages 9 to 12, Jr. Miss for ages 13 to 16 and Miss from 17 to 21. The Miss Yellowstone winner will advance to the Indiana State Festival Pageant.

The pageant is set to begin at 11 a.m. CT on the stage at the Starke County Fairgrounds in Hamlet.

Oregon-Davis Township Trustee Asks School Board for Land

The Oregon-Davis School Board heard a presentation of a request for the purchase of some school property at its most recent meeting.

“We heard a presentation by the Township Trustee with the investigation to build and go after property for a new fire station in Hamlet and they’re looking at the property where the old school used to sit,” said Superintendent Dr. Steve Disney.
