Two Arrested During Crackdown on Snowmobile Violations in Southern LaPorte County

 

A crackdown on snowmobile violations in southern LaPorte County led to two arrests Friday night. Indiana Conservation Officers, LaPorte County Police, and Westville Police saturated the area of U.S. 421 and County Road 375 South, after a group of snowmobile riders allegedly went there after fleeing from Conservation Officers around 10:30 p.m.

Mandatory Registration for Snowmobiles Now Handled by BMV

 
 
Owners of snowmobiles and other recreational outdoor vehicles will now have to visit the Bureau of Motor Vehicles for mandatory registration, instead of the Department of Natural Resources as was required in the past. The registration switched over on Jan. 1 to the BMV, requiring vehicle owners to register every three years for $30.

Registration may be done online at mybmv.com or in person at a BMV branch. Questions about the process should be directed to the BMV at 1-888-692-6841.

DNR Law Enforcement Responds to Snowmobile Fatality, Wrecks

 
 

Several snowmobile accidents, including one fatality, were reported over the weekend. The fatality occurred on Lake Manitou in Fulton County early Sunday morning, according to DNR officials. They say James Downs III, 51, of Rochester, was operating his snowmobile alone when the accident happened. Friends found him around 6 a.m. Sunday pinned under his snowmobile. Initial findings indicate Downs was approaching the shoreline, turned too sharply and was thrown from his snowmobile. Officials with the Fulton County Coroner’s Office say he died of blunt force trauma to his chest and torso. Speed, alcohol and reduced visibility are possible contributing factors to the crash, but toxicology results will not be available for several weeks. Continue reading

With Christmas behind us and the new year ahead, snow in the Kankakee Valley has, for the most part, melted away, but there’s sure to be more snow on the way. With the soft blanket of snow soon to be on the ground once again, many residents are itching to get their snowmobiles out for some winter fun. However, the city of Knox and other municipalities have ordinances on the books regulating the use of snowmobiles, so it’s wise to check with your local officials to ensure you are obeying the law.
