Starke County Residents Share Ideas for Spending Stellar Consolation Money

A county-wide art installation, more amenities at the Starke County Forest, and a relocated shelter at Wythogan Park were a few of the ideas Starke County residents had, when it comes to figuring out how Constellation of Starke should spend its $333,000. That’s the money the region was awarded by the state for being a finalist in last year’s Stellar Communities Designation Program.

Pulaski County Commissioners Suggest Clarifications, Conditions for Wind Turbine Ban

The Pulaski County Commissioners are recommending some additional language for the county’s proposed ban on wind turbines. On Monday, the commissioners voted to send a list of amendments to the advisory plan commission. It was drawn up for the commissioners by Community Development Commission Executive Director Nathan Origer.

Thousands of Sandhill Cranes to Descend Upon the Area Soon

It’s that time of year again – the sandhill cranes are migrating and soon, thousands of cranes will descend upon the Jasper-Pulaski Fish & Wildlife Area, prompting some 30,000 people to visit the area and witness the migration. Jim Bergens, property manager, told WKVI that throughout the migration season, tens of thousands of people visit Jasper-Pulaski to witness the more than 40,000 cranes that migrate during this time of the year.

Sandhill Cranes Return to Jasper-Pulaski Fish and Wildlife Area

The Sandhill Cranes are back at the Jasper-Pulaski Fish and Wildlife Area. Jim Bergens, the Property Manager, was asked how many of the big birds have migrated to the property so far this season.

“We count on Tuesdays and the last two counts have been in the six to eight thousand range,” said Jim Bergens. “The average peak is 16-20,000 and it occurs in late November, early December.”

Bergens  talked about the cranes’ migratory pattern.

“The birds are coming from Wisconsin and going to Central Florida and Jasper-Pulaski is right underneath that route. We just have the right kind of habitat that they like and often times, some of the cranes may spend several weeks here which is why we build up such large numbers. Then they push on south and they winter from Kentucky and Tennessee all the way to Florida.”
