Knox Board of Public Works Discusses Progress at Phoenix House

The Knox Board of Public Works approved a pay application for Chester Construction at their meeting this week in the amount of $49,563.74. The board members also approved a claim for Mark Milo Enterprises for $29,307.50.

Van Janovic from Territorial Engineering explained to the board that these claims are for the Phoenix House construction project. He said Chester’s work is about 91 percent complete and the parking lot work being done by Mark Milo is about 63 percent complete. He said he walked through the project area and was impressed with the work that has been done and it’s been on schedule.

Construction Work on the Phoenix House More Than Halfway Done

The Phoenix House construction project is moving along.

Bob Alloy from Territorial Engineering appeared before the Knox Board of Works members to present a pay application for the construction done. The amount of $82,269 was approved for Chester Construction.

Alloy said about 65 percent of the construction is done. There is $140,000 left to complete the project.

The construction project began in mid-January with site preparations beginning in December. The Phoenix House suffered flooding and grant money was sought by K-IRPC to aid in the construction project. The garage is being expanded to include a storage area, a group meeting room, a library and computer area.

Board of Public Works To Open CADA Project Bids

The Knox Board of Public Works will be opening bids Wednesday, Aug. 8 at 9:30 a.m. for the CADA project.

The Coalition Against Domestic Abuse recently received a grant for a construction project at the Phoenix House. The money will be used to extend the garage at the Phoenix House, that was destroyed in a flood a few years ago.

CADA Grant Contract Approved For Phoenix House

The Knox City Council gave Mayor Rick Chambers the authority to sign the Coalition Against Domestic Abuse grant contract last week. The Office of Community and Rural Affairs grant was for $424,000, with a 10 percent match from CADA, making the total $471,000. The money is to be used to extend the garage at the Phoenix House, an abuse shelter in Knox.

Two Vans Worth of Goods Donated to the Phoenix House

The North Judson-Wayne Township Public Library recently held a drive for the Phoenix House. They collected consumable items such as paper towels, toilet paper, and laundry detergent.

Roslynn Bejes mobilized the community, the schools, and businesses into supporting the organization. The goods that were collected filled two vans to capacity. In addition, the history, science, and English departments at the high school collected the most items.

CADA Receives $10,000 Grant

Starke County’s Coalition Against Domestic Abuse, or CADA, is the recipient of a $10,000 grant from Kankakee Valley REMC.

CADA received the money through the Operation Round-up Trust grant program. The money will be used to expand the Phoenix House, a transitional housing program for victims of domestic violence and their dependent children. The additional space will add meeting/advocacy rooms for clients, additional office space and storage space for donated items for victims of domestic abuse. A restroom will also be built for convenience of advocacy volunteers.

City of Knox and CADA Receive Grant

A $424,620 grant was recently presented to the City of Knox by Lieutenant Governor Becky Skillman. Knox Mayor Rick Chambers accompanied a number of members from the Coalition Against Domestic Abuse, or CADA, to the Indianapolis presentation last Friday for the award ceremony.

The City of Knox applied for a Community Focus Fund Grant, in partnership with CADA. In previous meetings of the Knox City Council, Ruth Matsey explained the need for an addition to the Phoenix House building. Water ruined a portion of the building that was used for storage. The money from the grant will be used for the construction of the addition.

CADA, KIRPC Asks Knox City Council to Sponsor Phoenix House Expansion

Ruth Matsey, President of the Coalition Against Domestic Abuse, and Edwin Buswell of the Kankakee Regional Planning Commission appeared before the Knox City Council Tuesday night to ask the City officials to approve sponsorship of an addition at the Phoenix House. Since 1995, the Phoenix House has served as a short-term emergency shelter for women fleeing abusive relationships.

Starke County Community Foundation Awards Grants

The Starke County Community Foundation made the holiday bright for many community organizations during its 2010 Grant Award Banquet. Over $24,000 was awarded on Monday, December 6th at the Community Center in Knox.

The grants are part of the Community Foundation’s Unrestricted Funds which allow the Community Foundation to assess the greatest needs of the community and assist the individual agency programs. Since 1998, the Community Foundation has awarded over $1.7 million to local organizations and projects that make a difference in Starke County.
