The new alternative faith-based school, the Crossing, hosted an open house Wednesday at their location in Knox. So far about 10 students are enrolled to attend. They will be hosting another open house today from 8 a.m until 3 p.m at the old Sears store in the Mint Leaf Plaza off of U.S. 35.
West Nile Virus Found in Mosquitoes in Marshall County
Mosquitoes in Marshall County have tested positive for West Nile virus, but no human cases have been reported.
State health officials say mosquitoes in Pike County have also tested positive and they expect more to be found throughout the summer months. Officials indicate that it’s impossible to predict the severity of this year’s West Nile virus season as temperatures and rainfall determine the level of mosquito populations.
Railroad Crossing Repair Scheduled in Tippecanoe
The railroad crossing between 19th Road and Illion Street in Tippecanoe will be closed Monday, May 5 through Friday, May 16. Norfolk Southern crews are repairing the crossing at that location in Marshall County.

Travel Advisory Levels Vary By County
Starke County roads are open for essential travel, such as trips to and from work or emergency situations. Pulaski County is still under a travel advisory warning, which means non-emergency travelers are subject to receiving tickets, and Marshall County is under no restriction whatsoever. Those decisions are made by the commissioners of each county.

One Dead, Two Injured in Marshall County Crash
A two-vehicle head-on collision last evening in Plymouth claimed the life of a LaPaz man. The wreck occurred around 5:30 on Michigan Road just north of Higbee Corner. Gary L. Richard, 54, of LaPaz was pronounced dead, and two other people were taken to Memorial Hospital in South Bend. Their names have not been released, and the crash remains under investigation.
March Madness Snowstorm Socks Kankakee Valley
It’s a whole different kind of March Madness across the Kankakee Valley this morning. Roads are slick and snow-covered after a late season overnight snowstorm. This is making for hazardous travel. If you do have to be out, allow yourself plenty of time to reach your destination, and remember, ice and snow, take it slow. Maintain a safe distance from other vehicles, brake early and accelerate slowly. If you see a snow plow, stay back and give it plenty of room to operate. Don’t tailgate or try to pass a plow truck, as the roadway will be clearer behind the plow than in front of it.

Snow should taper off into flurries by midday, but additional snowfall is expected tonight and into tomorrow before temperatures warm up into the 40s by the middle of the week. Fortunately the snow will not be a factor for schools today, as most school systems within the WKVI listening area are on spring break this week. INDOT Allocates $2.1 Million For U.S. 31
The Indiana Department of Transportation has allocated a $2.1 million federal grant to build a portion of U.S. 31 in Marshall County near Plymouth to make sure the state doesn’t lose the money.
The Obama administration announced in August that states had until yesterday to specify how to spend $473 million in federal dollars that had been earmarked for highway projects between 2003 and 2006.
INDOT spokesman Matt Deitchley said that the state had always intended to use that money to rebuild a portion of U.S. 31 between South Bend and Plymouth, but not a specific part. He says the state will hear bids from contractors to begin construction on that stretch of the road next year.
Seatbelt Patrols Amped Up in Marshall County
Seatbelt patrols throughout Marshall County have been stepped up since April 20th, as part of the state’s Rural Demonstration Project. State police officials have announced their participation in the annual effort, which aims to increase seat belt use by motorists in rural counties with the highest percentage of unrestrained fatalities.
The Indiana Criminal Justice Institute says 64 percent of the state’s overall traffic fatalities occurred on rural roadways in 2011. In an effort to reduce that number, about 24 law enforcement agencies throughout the state, along with the Indiana State Police, will participate in the project that runs through May 17. Participating agencies will be tasked with looking out for unrestrained motorists in any vehicle, including pickup trucks.
Indiana State Police Investigates Accident in Marshall County; Cause of Death Determined
A Nappanee man was involved in an accident early this morning on Beech Road in Marshall County.
Indiana State Police Sergeant Trent Smith told us that at 6:00 a.m. ET yesterday, passersby found tracks alongside the road that led into a drainage ditch. They saw that a pick-up truck had overturned into the 20 foot deep ditch that was filled with six inches of water. Indiana State Police officers arrived on scene and found one occupant, 75-year-old Louis Cady, dead inside the vehicle.
A preliminary autopsy conducted in Mishawaka by Certified Forensic Pathologist, Dr. Prahlow, showed that Louis Cady, 75, of Nappanee, died from drowning. Marshall County Coroner, Bill Cleavenger, who released the press release, stated that he believes Cady was traveling on an unfamiliar stretch of road, drifted left and rolled down an embankment into the ditch sometime late Wednesday night or early Thursday morning. The accident remains under investigation by the Coroner, Indiana State Police and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
Plymouth Woman Arrested after Police Pursuit
An officer from the Starke County Sheriff’s Department arrested a Plymouth woman after a pursuit incident Tuesday afternoon.
A caller notified the Sheriff’s Department of an intoxicated driver leaving the area of 900 East and 300 North in Starke County. A detective was in the area and spotted the suspect vehicle and attempted to conduct a traffic stop but the vehicle failed to stop. The detective pursued the vehicle from 150 North and State Road 23 in Starke County to Plymouth and then to Culver. The driver stopped the vehicle after a minor vehicle accident in Marshall County on Tulip Road, just north of 14B road.
Relay for Life of Culver Steps off Friday
Walkers for the fourth annual Relay For Life of Culver will take their first steps toward a $130,000 goal at 7 p.m. Friday, April 15, at Culver Academies Oliver Field, located on at the intersection of Indiana 10 and 117.
The all-night event will feature Indianapolis Colts placekicker Adam Vinatieri for the second consecutive year. Vinatieri will speak at the survivor dinner preceding the Relay, attend the opening ceremony, and walk the first lap. New this year will be a fireworks show after dusk provided by Mad Bomber Fireworks Productions, according to Co-chairman Kyle Blankenship, a Crown Point, Ind., senior.
While the Weather Remains Calm, INDOT Prepares for More Winter Weather
We’ve enjoyed a few snow free days in this new year, but don’t get too excited. As we all know, Indiana weather can change quickly from one day to the next which means we could see another big snow event at any time.
The Indiana Department of Transportation is ready for the next event as their top priority is snow and ice removal. INDOT uses all available resources to keep roads open, maximize the mobility of the traveling public and help minimize accidents due to winter traveling conditions.
Minor Earthquake Hits Central Indiana
An earthquake about five miles below the ground hit north central Indiana shortly before sunrise Thursday morning.
The U.S. Geological Survey reported a 3.8 magnitude earthquake centered five miles southeast of Greentown, Indiana. According to published reports, the Indiana Geological Survey had no records of an earthquake this size in Central Indiana ever.
James Strong Named Commander of the Indiana State Police Post in Bremen
Indiana State Police Superintendent, Paul Whitesell, recently announced the promotion of First Sergeant, James Strong, to the rank of Lieutenant to serve as the Commander of the Indiana State Police Post in Bremen. The Bremen Post covers Marshall, St. Joseph, Kosciusko, and Elkhart Counties. Strong earned this promotion through written testing and a competitive interview process.
Charlie Collins and Kris Rannells Give Starke County Commissioners First Responder Report
The Starke County Commissioners heard a report on the First Responder Training from Charlie Collins and Kris Rannells. There are now 9 certified first responders since November 15th. All scored over 90% and are operating at this time.
Every fire department in the County now has at least one first responder. The protocols are written and have been approved, according to Rannells.
Unemployment Figures Show Little Improvement
The unemployment report for November of 2010 shows little improvement for Indiana Counties. However, the State of Indiana’s unemployment went down.
Unemployment Report Shows Improvement
The unemployment report is out for October. Starke County went down in percentage, but went up in the state ranking. Starke County went from 11.3% in September to an even 11% in October. But the County moved from the ninth highest unemployment rate in the state to seventh in October.
Pulaski County and Porter County had the lowest rates in our area. Pulaski came in at 8.0% and Porter was 7.9%. Marshall was an even 10.0%; La Porte 10.6%; Fulton 9.2%; St. Joseph 10.6% and Jasper was 8.5%. Since the January report, Starke has dropped from 13.6% for the 11.0%; Pulaski dropped from 10.1% to 8.0% and Marshall dropped from 12.4% to 10.0%.
