Law Enforcement Agencies Begin Operation Pull Over Blitz

 
 

Law enforcement agencies across Indiana are taking part in an Operation Pull Over blitz through the end of the month. Patrol officers will be looking for drunk drivers and seatbelt violators.

Last November 490 alcohol-related crashes occurred in Indiana, resulting in 224 injuries and 13 fatalities. A total of 735 drivers were arrested statewide for driving under the influence, and 9.504 seatbelt citations were issued to drivers and passengers who were not buckled up. Continue reading

LaPorte Police Investigating Counterfeit $100 Bills

 
 

LaPorte Police are investigating reports of counterfeit $100 bills being presented for payment at two businesses on Pine Lake Avenue. Officers were called to the NAPA Auto Parts last Thursday after an employee took a $100 bill from a customer who bought $28 worth of merchandise. The clerk checked the bill with a counterfeit pen, according to the incident report but later realized it was a fake. Continue reading

Police Warn of IRS Telephone Scam

  
 

Police in LaPorte warn of telephone scammers pretending to be IRS agents preying on unsuspecting citizens. The scammer claims there is something wrong with the victim’s tax return and tries to scare the victim into wiring them money by threatening to send an IRS agent to the home within an hour. Police say the scammers seem to be targeting senior citizens, some of whom get a second telephone call claiming a grandchild or other relative is in jail and needs bond money. Continue reading

High-Speed Pursuit Still Under Investigation

 
 

The investigation into Wednesday’s high-speed pursuit through Grovertown and into Marshall County is continuing. A Starke County Sheriff’s Deputy initially tried to stop a car driven by Paul Coffin on U.S. 30 at 1200 East. Coffin drove for another mile before pulling over, according to information released by the Starke County Sheriff’s Department. As the deputy was getting out of his car, Coffin reportedly backed into it, causing the patrol car to strike the deputy. Continue reading

Sheriff’s Department Releases More Information About High-Speed Pursuit

 
 

The Starke County Sheriff’s Department has released more information about a high-speed pursuit that started near Grovertown and ended in Marshall County. A sheriff’s deputy tried to stop a vehicle on U.S. 30 west of 1200 East, but the driver kept going. He finally stopped at 1100 East but put his car into reverse when the officer got out of his patrol vehicle. The suspect backed into the police car, causing the vehicle to strike the deputy. Items that can be disposed of include, ammunition, flares, fireworks, aerosols, automotive supplies, batteries, corrosives, expired medications, mercury containing products, florescent tubes, thermometers, thermostats, paint, medical sharps, pesticides as well as other poisons, and waste fuels.  Continue reading

LaPorte County Man Arrested after Police Pursuit

A Westville man was arrested on Tuesday after he fled police in a vehicle.

LaPorte Police Department officers initiated a traffic stop on Boston Street near the Norfolk Southern railroad crossing near Factory Street. The officers recognized James D. Brinsfield, 38, who was wanted on a charge of dealing in a schedule I controlled substance (heroin) as a Class A felony.

A LaPorte man police there say robbed the CVS drug store early Saturday morning was arrested a short time after the early morning holdup. Officers responded to an alarm just before 1 a.m. to the store on Lincolnway. An employee told the officers a man came to the pharmacy with a note requesting specific medications. Continue reading
