Kankakee River Basin Commission Holds Meeting

  
 

The Kankakee River Basin Commission met Thursday at the Kankakee Fish and Wildlife Headquarters in North Judson.

A report was given by a Three-County Drainage Board representative and officials are busy trying to gather paperwork in order to purchase a home on the Marshall/Starke County line. They are hoping to raze the home as erosion has caused an unstable ground condition on a sand bluff and the home could very well fall into the Yellow River. The drainage board will continue working with the Kankakee River Basin Commission and the Department of Homeland Security in following the proper procedures to complete this project.

Prescribed Fire Workshop Set for March 16

 A landowner workshop is scheduled for March 16 from 9 a.m. to noon to discuss prescribed fires.

Linda Byer, District 2 wildlife biologist at the Kankakee Fish and Wildlife Headquarters in North Judson, said the class will teach landowners how to do a prescribed burn on their property.

“That is a burn with a plan,” explained Byer. “It is for a specific location to do a specific job. Another term is controlled burn. It is a managed fire.”

Hunter Education Course Scheduled

A Hunter Education Class is being offered Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 23 and 24, at the Kankakee Fish and Wildlife Headquarters on Toto Road in North Judson.

The course is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. CT and there is no fee for the course. Attendance is mandatory for both days and children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult. You are encouraged to bring a sack lunch.

An Indiana Hunter Education Certification will be given to all participants who are successful in completing the course. This certification is required for any hunters born after Dec. 31, 1986.
