Starke County Commissioners Settle Pending Litigation

starke-county-courthouseThe Starke County Commissioners decided to settle some pending litigation at a special meeting on Thursday night, however, the Reid Collins Tsai team will be present to make sure everything goes well.

Among the settlement agreements discussed was with former Veterans Service Officer Terry Turner. An age discrimination claim was filed with the state civil rights commission following his termination on June 15th.

Turner Files Age Discrimination Claim Against County Commissioners

  
 

Former Starke County Veterans Service Officer Terry Turner has filed an age discrimination claim against the county commissioners over his recent termination. He was fired during the June 15th county commissioners meeting. Turner, 67, advises WKVI News he filed a claim on Friday, July 10th with the state civil rights commission office in South Bend, and it has been forwarded to Indianapolis for review. Ind. Civil Rights Commission and Dept. of Child Services Look Into Claims Against MBH

An investigation is underway into the Michiana Behavioral Health Center after a number of former employees claimed the center has committed a number of employee discrimination violations and maintains an unsafe work environment through consistent understaffing. Dominique Smith, a former employee at the center between November 2010 and April 2012, said that she was witness to a number of incidents involving sexual misconduct and physical abuse and that she was discriminated against while employed at MBHC. She also claimed that the administration ignored her health issues her supervisors intentionally mistreated her specifically.

Indiana Civil Rights Commission Investigating Mental Health Facility

Last month’s protest outside a Marshall County mental health facility has prompted a state agency to investigate reports of wrongdoing there. The Indiana Civil Rights Commission is looking into operations at Michiana Behavioral Health. Former employees of the Plymouth facility claim it is understaffed and puts patients in danger. Officials there deny the claims. Findings from the ongoing investigation should be available in a couple of weeks.
