One Ancilla College student is combining their education with a bit of woodworking skill.
Sophomore Andrew Huff will begin selling long boards at Culver Marina and Outpost Sports in the near future. Under his company: Huff & Puff Board Co., he uses reclaimed wood to manufacturing the devices. Long boards function similarly to a skateboard, but the extra length provides greater traction and stability.

A bill introduced in the Indiana Senate could make the playing field between public and private schools a bit different.
That’s according to North Judson-San Pierre Superintendent Lynn Johnson. Senate Bill 470 would allow for schools eligible to accept choice scholarships to use another nationally recognized assessment as opposed to the ISTEP program.

A deadline is approaching for students interested in scholarships from the Starke County Community Foundation.
The organization says it has about 30 scholarships available for Starke County students to pursue post secondary education. According to a press release, more than $55-thousand was distributed in 2014.

Time is running out for donations to be made that will help complete a downtown project in Knox.
30 high school seniors have been working on plans to develop a Serenity Garden. That space is expected to be completed this spring before classes let out for the summer. The project aims to beautify the Knox downtown.

The newly formed group is looking to provide greater access to technical training and apprenticeships, as well as college. Their efforts apply to both youth and adults in Starke County.

Plenty of snow accumulation cancelled school yet again in the Kankakee Valley on Monday.
Due to the number of snow days taken, some school corporations now have some decisions to make on just how they plan to make up even more days of class days. In Indiana, no fewer than 180 instructional days can be held.

More Hoosiers are graduating college on time.
That’s according to a report from the Indiana Commission for Higher Education. The report says that since financial aid reform was adopted in 2013, the number of college students taking and completing the minimum number of courses needed to graduate on time has increased by double digits.

The number of snow days taken in Culver Schools has now affected the school calendar.
The Culver School Board, Monday night, approved a measure that attempts to make up a day lost to the weather by having students attend class on Good Friday – which was previously part of the extended spring holiday weekend.

The Knox School Board met Monday night to approve items that help operate the school corporations’ finances.
Knox Superintendent A.J. Gappa described the meeting as taking care of regular business. The Board approved a measure transferring 2014’s capital project fund into the 2015 fiscal year.

A new semester started last week at Starke County’s newest alternative school.
The Crossing Educational Center began operations in August of last year, and resumed classes for the spring semester last Monday. The school provides an alternative setting for students who often find themselves struggling in public schools.

A new semester at area schools is bringing another opportunity to meet qualifications to become a Certified Nursing Assistant at Ancilla College.
Ancilla is offering the CNA courses beginning February 2nd, but spots are still available for those interested. CNA’s have opportunities to work in long-term care, in home, hospitals, and doctors’ office facilities in the workforce.

Starke County organizations are being asked to help provide more students and adults access to higher education
The College Success Coalition is newly formed and is sending a steering committee to attend workshops in Plymouth. Starke County will join about 20 other Indiana counties for the sessions as they develop the coalition.

Revenue projections for the state of Indiana have area representatives thinking about items to tackle during the upcoming session of the General Assembly.
The state budget committee reviewed revenue forecasts in December, showing a 2.3-percent uptick in 2015 and a 2.4-percentage point increase the following year.

The new alternative faith-based school, the Crossing, hosted an open house Wednesday at their location in Knox. So far about 10 students are enrolled to attend. They will be hosting another open house today from 8 a.m until 3 p.m at the old Sears store in the Mint Leaf Plaza off of U.S. 35.

Mitch Daniels’ administration recently announced that $320 million dollars had been found in corporate tax revenue. Daniels blamed a computer error for the reason why the money was just recently found. The money had been accumulating for about four years.
At the time of the announcement, the governor said it may signal a refund for taxpayers.
