Reserved Turkey Hunt Permits Now Available

Starting today and running through March 22nd, hunters have the ability to apply for a reserved turkey hunt by visiting Hunting.IN.gov. To apply, click on the ‘reserved hunt info’ link that appears on that page.

No late entries will be accepted and applicants must possess a valid hunting license for the species they wish to hunt.

Starke County Surveyor Thanks Local Farmers For Stepping Up to Help Out With Flood Response

According to Starke County Surveyor Bill Crase, four breached levees in the Starke County and La Porte County areas have recently been fixed, while work on one site is being postponed due to the current levels of the Kankakee River.

Surveyor Crase explained that while working on the final section of a levee, workers realized that the river wasn’t dropping. He said if they sealed it up, the pressure would have caused the water to burst out elsewhere so they weren’t able to fix it just yet. While they have slowed the breach down a bit, Crase said crews continue to monitor the spot and are waiting for the river to drop before patching it up any further. Continue reading

More Than 1600 Hoosier Students Benefit from Field Trip Grant Program

ftThanks to the Discovering the Outdoors Field Trip Grant Program, students at 22 Indiana schools will learn about nature by visiting Indiana state parks and reservoirs this school year. The grants are open to public, private, religious and home-school educators and are administered through the Indiana Natural Resources Foundation, the supporting non-profit of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. DNR Makes Some Changes to Campground Fees

The increase in fees will allow operations and maintenance to continue at Glendale, J.E. Roush Lake, and Willow Slough Fish & Wildlife Areas. DNR Considers Rule Change to Allow River Otter Trapping

River OtterRiver otters are thriving a little too well in Indiana nearly 20 years after their successful reintroduction into the state. Last year biologists with the division of fish and wildlife received 86 complaints of river otters eating fish from private ponds and commercial hatcheries or destroying private property. That’s up from 69 complaints in 2012. Also the number of control permits issued or renewed nearly doubled from 11 in 2012 to 21 in 2013. Continue reading

Hunting Accident Spurs Hunting Safety Reminders

 
 
A hunting accident under investigation in Newton County this week has prompted Indiana conservation officers to remind hunters to stay safe while hunting, particularly when perched in an elevated tree stand. A hunter fell to the ground from a tree stand approximately 20 feet from the ground, and the investigation revealed that 18-year-old Tyler Claus had fallen asleep prior to falling from the stand.

DNR Names Officer of the Year

 
 
Employees with the Department of Natural Resources were recently honored with annual awards.

Jeffrey Richwine, a conservation officer with the District 10 office, was selected as officer of the year in his district. District 10 encompasses the northwestern part of the state that includes Starke, Pulaski and LaPorte counties. That recognition made him eligible to be nominated for officer of the year and a candidate for the Pitzer Award.
