Indiana’s elected representatives in Congress are reacting to action taken by President Barack Obama on the subject on guns.

Hoosier Vet Has Budget-Balancing Concerns

Monday, Memorial Day, is a day set aside to honor fallen veterans, but one Hoosier veteran is expressing concern that the country would be doing a disservice to those who survive if the President and Congress modify cost-of-living adjustments to veteran’s benefits and Social Security. Army veteran Tom Harris said balancing the budget through the use of a “Chained-CPI” to determine adjustments would have negative effects on those who have served the United States.

Coats Backs Alternative Gun Bill

U.S. Sen. Dan Coats
U.S. Sen. Dan Coats

Indiana Senator Dan Coats says he supports an alternative to the gun legislation currently being debated in Washington. He says the compromise bill supports the Second Amendment while addressing a number of issues that have come to light since the Newtown, Conn. school shooting in December.
These include strengthening the efforts to improve a current check system that is incomplete under existing law and dealing with school safety and mental heath issues. Coats’ proposal fixes the National Instant Criminal Background Check system. It also provides resources to help address mental health and school safety, protects veterans from false health determinations and addresses gun trafficking and straw purchasing. Coats is one of several Republican co-sponsors of the amendment. Read the text of the measure here: Protecting Communities and Preserving the Second Amendment Act 041713

Greg Andrews to Run Against Jackie Walorski

Greg Andrews, M.D.

There’s a new face in the Republican Primary: Greg Andrews, M.D., will be going toe-to-toe with Jackie Walorski. Andrews says many of the issues he plans to tackle if elected revolved around the healthcare field because of his history as a physician.

“I am well informed about issues that nobody’s addressing, and they’ve gotta be addressed. There’s a doctor shortage, nursing shortage, nurse educator shortage, and Alzheimer’s will bankrupt the United States by 2050 if we do not work headstrong against that disease,” said Andrews.

Andrews says he wants to focus on preventing the rationing of medicine, and says he plans to utilize his expertise in healthcare law and policy, and his Juris Doctor degree earned from Notre Dame law school. Andrews says that while this is the first time he’s stepping into the field of politics, he sees a number of changes that need to be made.

Andrews says that with a lot of money going toward healthcare, the system needs to be more efficient with it, starting at the family clinic level. If we can invest a little more in having coordinated care of patients, Andrews says we can save these families trips to the Emergency Room or other urgent care, controlling costs.

After growing up in Erie, Pennsylvania, Andrews says he lived in this area for most of his adult life. He attended Notre Dame law school after receiving a scholarship as a Harvard undergrad, and worked in La Porte and South Bend, even finishing his residency in South Bend. Andrews says his ties to the community are strong, and he’s looking to improve the community if elected to congress.

Jackie Walorski: Another Run for Congress?

Jackie Walorski

In her first lengthy interview since the election, Jackie Walorski told South Bend Tribune writer, Kevin Allen, that she is keeping her options open for another run for a congressional seat. Walorski lost to Congressman Joe Donnelly in November in a race that was decided by only 2,500 votes. In the article, Walorski blamed her defeat on the fact that Libertarian candidate, Mark Vogel, got a last minute boost in a mailer sent out by the Democrat Party. The mailer called Vogel the “true” conservative candidate in the race.
