Facebook Helps Reunite Knox Man with Nurse Who Saved His Life

A 92-year-old Knox man was reunited Monday with the nurse who saved his life. It was Memorial Day when Leroy Gudeman, his wife, and two friends were having dinner at Applebee’s in Valparaiso, and he began choking on a piece of steak. He was able to indicate that he was not okay, and a member of the group began the Heimlich maneuver. Gudeman says that’s about all he remembers until he woke up in the hospital two days later.

Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ Honor Dr. Otis R. Bowen and Donors

Bowen PlaqueA new plaque in the lobby of the Catherine Kasper Life Center on the Center at Donaldson Campus celebrates the generosity of one of the ministry’s most staunch supporters. The Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ Foundation created the Otis Bowen, M.D. Fund after his death two years ago. The pediatrician-turned-politician resided there until his death. Sister Judith Diltz says they are delighted to be able to honor Doc Bowen.

“His presence here among us was a gift and a grace. Carol put many miles on that wheelchair as she rolled him around this facility and our whole campus, and he was just such a delight.” Continue reading

Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ to Honor Dr. Otis R. Bowen and Donors

poor handmaidsJoin the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ Foundation for a special ceremony today commemorating the Otis R. Bowen, M.D. Fund. Officials will unveil a plaque honoring his generous gifts to the Poor Handmaids and their ministries at The Center at Donaldson. Doc Bowen resided at the Catherine Kasper Life Center until his death in May of 2013.

The Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ Foundation created the Otis R. Bowen, M.D. Fund to commemorate Dr. Bowen’s outstanding years of public service and his service to the Poor Handmaids and the ministries at The Center at Donaldson. Dr. Bowen also served as honorary chairman of the foundation’s campaign to build assisted living and a college residence hall. Continue reading
