Bill to Study Elimination of License Plate Stickers Heads to Indiana Senate

Rep. Doug Gutwein presents legislation to study the elimination of license plate stickers at the Statehouse on Jan. 28

License plate stickers may soon be a thing of the past, under a bill advanced Tuesday by the Indiana House of Representatives. The bill’s author, Representative Doug Gutwein, says the state spends over $6 million a year to make and send out the decals but only collected $450,000 last year in fines for expired plates.

BMV Closures in November

If you have any business to conduct at the Bureau of Motor Vehicles during the month of November you’ll want to tend to that as soon as possible. BMV locations will be closed intermittently for the remainder of the month.

This Friday and Saturday, all locations will be closed in observance of Veteran’s Day. Later in the month, all branches will be closed for Thanksgiving on Thursday, November, 23rd and the following day for Lincoln’s birthday. Continue reading

Grand Opening Set for New LaPorte Licence Branch Location

 
 

The LaPorte License Branch has a new place to call home.

BMV Commissioner Kent Abernathy, State Senator Jim Arnold, and State Representative Tom Dermody will be part of tomorrow’s grand opening of the new LaPorte License Branch building at 1301 Pine Lake Road.

The facility where the license branch was previously located caught fire in October. The employees conducted transactions in a mobile unit at the site for only a few days until repairs could be made to the building.

LaPorte BMV Fire Ruled Undetermined

 
 

The Sunday morning fire at the Bureau of Motor Vehicles branch in LaPorte was ruled undetermined.

LaPorte Fire Chief Andy Snyder told WKVI News that there were a couple of sources where the fire started that could point to an electrical issue. The fire caused extensive damage to two rooms in the BMV office.

The BMV office shares building space with a video store and a restaurant. The fire was contained to the BMV.

BMV to Issue Refund in Excise Tax

  
 

Officials with the Bureau of Motor Vehicles and the Indiana Department of Revenue will be working together to issue excise tax refunds to affected customers.

Indiana BMV Commissioner Don Snemis stated that some vehicles were classified in error for excise tax purposes. These misclassifications stretch back to 2004 when the BMV’s System Tracking and Record Support system was implemented on a limited basis.

TXT L8R Contest to Offer $5,000 in Scholarships

 
 
High school and college students are encouraged to take part in a social media contest sponsored by the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles, Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, Indiana Department of Labor, Indiana Department of Transportation and the Indiana State Police.

The entities have partnered to award $5,000 in scholarships to students who compose the most creative, inspiring and viral posts on Twitter, Instagram or Vine using the slogan “Drive Now. TXT L8R.” The high school and college student whose post has the most tweets, retweets and favorites on Twitter will win. For Vine and Instagram entries, the most likes and the most creative will win.

Mandatory Registration for Snowmobiles Now Handled by BMV

 
 
Owners of snowmobiles and other recreational outdoor vehicles will now have to visit the Bureau of Motor Vehicles for mandatory registration, instead of the Department of Natural Resources as was required in the past. The registration switched over on Jan. 1 to the BMV, requiring vehicle owners to register every three years for $30.

Registration may be done online at mybmv.com or in person at a BMV branch. Questions about the process should be directed to the BMV at 1-888-692-6841.

BMV Class Action Lawsuit Entitles Drivers to BMV Credit

 
 
The BMV has responded to a class action lawsuit that alleges the bureau has been overcharging for drivers’ licenses, claiming the agency collected $30 million in overcharges. A hearing will take place in Marion County Superior Court on Nov. 12 at 11 a.m. to discuss the deal between the BMV and plaintiffs in the suit, in which the BMV agreed they have overcharged 2 million citizens to get or renew their licenses for a six-year period.

License Branches to Close for Labor Day Holiday

 
 
The Bureau of Motor Vehicles will be closed tomorrow and Monday in observance of the Labor Day holiday.

Most license branches will resume normal business hours on Tuesday, Sept. 3. The Demotte, Knox, Monticello, Nappanee and 12 others in the state will reopen on Wednesday, Sept. 4.

New Location for Knox License Branch

 
 
The Knox branch of the Bureau of Motor Vehicles has a new place to call home.

After being housed in a building at 307 Carlson Drive for many years, the license branch is now located in the strip mall directly north of the Christos restaurant and bears the address of 1919 S. Heaton St.

The Knox branch is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. CT on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. While in-person transactions are not available on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, you may conduct license or registration transactions online at www.mybmv.com.

BMV Branches Open Monday and Tuesday for Photo IDs

Knox License Branch

The Bureau of Motor Vehicles will be open on Election Day to give you time to obtain a photo ID needed in order to vote.

Full-service branches will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. prevailing time on Monday, November 7th and from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 8th. Branches will only process ID cards and drivers licenses on those two days.

Voter Registration Nearing Deadline

The November General Election is nearing and so is the deadline to register to vote. The last day to register is Tuesday, October 11th.

If you have a valid Indiana driver’s license or Indiana state-issued identification card can use the online service. You can visit this website to register or update your voter registration card. If you have moved since the last time you voted, you should update your information. You may also register by mail or in-person at a county voter registration office, the Indiana Election Division or a branch office of the Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
