Francesville Looking to Sell Unneeded Police Vehicle, Tractor
The Francesville Town Council is taking steps to sell a couple unneeded vehicles. “There was a motion to take our old tractor to auction to try and sell it,” says Clerk-Treasurer Linda Bennett, “and our old police vehicle – they’re trying to find out if someone was interested in it.”
Knox Planning Commission to Continue Accessory Building Discussion
The Knox Planning Commission members held a lengthy discussion over accessory buildings when they met Tuesday night.
Commission Vice President John Wilson said he found a definition for accessory buildings, stating that they are essentially any outdoor structure that is detached. Benefit Breakfast for North Judson Fire Chaplain Scheduled for Tomorrow
The North Judson-Wayne Township Fire Department is holding a benefit breakfast for Chaplain Paul Newcomer at 7 a.m. on Saturday.
At Monday night’s town council meeting Fire Chief Joe Leszek explained that Newcomer was diagnosed with prostate cancer and recently underwent a successful surgery. They are holding this at-will donation benefit as a way to raise funds to help cover his medical expenses. Continue reading

Starke Election Board to Review Challenges Against Railroad Township Trustee Candidate
The Railroad Township Trustee’s race is already generating some controversy. Tomorrow, the Starke County Election Board will consider two challenges against John Harris. He’s running against incumbent Mandy Thomason for the Republican Party nomination in the May primary.
Starke County Commissioners Consider Request for Code Enforcement Officer
Starke County Building Inspector Terry Stephenson asked the commissioners for permission to hire a code enforcement officer.
Stephenson told the commissioners that he needs someone to help with investigating code and ordinance violations and “help clean up the county”.
Pulaski County Road 700 North Bridge Replacement to Start Next Month
Final preparations are underway for the replacement of the bridge on Pulaski County Road 700 North over Bogus Run. Jeff Larrison with United Consulting gave an update to the county commissioners Monday. “We’ve conducted the pre-construction meeting with JCI, the contractor that was selected, and we basically have the plan in place now for how to address the project timing-wise,” he explained. “Construction is expected to start March 1, weather-permitting.”
Public Hearing Over OCRA Grant Application Held During NJ Town Council Meeting
A public hearing over a proposed grant application was held during the North Judson Town Council meeting earlier this week.
On Monday, KIRPC Executive Director Edwin Buswell explained that the grant application requesting a $550,000 wastewater/drinking water grant is due to the Office of Community and Rural Affairs on Friday. Buswell said the local match is for $1,268,000 which will come in the form of an SRF Loan. Continue reading
Chesapeake and Indiana Railroad Plans Track Upgrades
The operator of North Judson’s short line railroad plans to rehabilitate 15 miles of track, thanks to a $300,000 Industrial Rail Service Fund grant. The Chesapeake and Indiana Railroad says it will install more than 4,400 new ties on a stretch of track through LaPorte County. Railroad representatives say that will bring the segment up to Class 1 track standards, which allow freight trains to travel at up to 10 miles per hour.
Francesville Wrapping Up Wastewater Upgrades
The Town of Francesville is putting the finishing touches on its sewer project.
West Central School Board Approves Policy Revisions
The West Central School Board members approved the first reading of policy manual revisions. Superintendent Don Street said there were a few included in the discussion.
“The board approved student suicide prevention and the required plan for seclusions and restraints in schools as well as the military recruiter’s parent opt-out provisions under ESSA,” said Street.
Additional readings will be considered during their meeting in March.
Culver Superintendent Informs School Board of Leftover Bond Funds
At Monday night’s Culver School Board meeting, Superintendent Karen Shuman told members that renovations to the cafeteria at the Middle/High School are officially complete.
She stated that the flooring and furnishing portion of the cafeteria project cost about $90,000 and was paid for with bond funds.
Shuman also shared that there is a little more than $300,000 worth of bond funds leftover that must be spent prior to the end of the fiscal year in December. Continue reading

The Town of Hamlet is switching its trash pickup provider. The town council Wednesday approved a two-year contract with Local Affordable Disposal of Hanna.
Sign Replacement at Henry F. Schricker House Discussed During Knox Planning Commission Meeting
While discussing new business during Tuesday night’s Knox Planning Commission meeting, Planning Administrator Kenny Pfost alerted members of a request he received about the Henry F. Schricker House.
Pfost said a representative asked him about installing a sign in the front yard of the Henry F. Schricker House on Main Street. Under the current sign ordinance, they would be limited to a 2×2 sign because it is in a residential area. Continue reading

The Starke County Sheriff’s Department will have a third K9 unit.
Sheriff Bill Dulin asked the Starke County Commissioners for permission to officially approve the addition to the department Monday night.
Pulaski County Commissioners Choose Construction Contractor for Courthouse Elevator Replacement
The Pulaski County Courthouse elevator is another step closer to getting replaced. On Monday, the county commissioners chose TL Kincaid Contracting to build the new elevator for $489,000.
Starke County Highway Department Looks into Brine Application
Norwayne Field Amphitheater Was Delivered and is Being Stored Temporarily
The amphitheater for Norwayne Field in North Judson has been delivered and its size called for alternative storage options to be utilized.
Initially, the plan was to temporarily store it in the park garage, but at Monday’s town council meeting, Clerk-Treasurer Andrew Rowe stated that it was a bit too big for that. Town Superintendent Marshall Horstmann said they were able to store part of it where they originally planned and another portion is being stored in a building out on Railroad Street.
