Week in Review for July 25th-29th, 2011

Here is just some of the news that made the news in the Kankakee Valley this week:

Gabriel French, Elizabeth Boyd and Joshua Givens were arrested Saturday after officers conducted a search warrant at a residence in Knox and found active methamphetamine labs.

Brian Ball of Bass Lake suffered a concussion after a tree fell on him while he was putting up a tent in his yard. Ball’s neighbor, Jim O’Hara, found him unconscious and performed CPR on Ball when he couldn’t find a pulse.

Dusty Kasten, 40, a Washington Township Firefighter, was killed in an ATV accident on Friday, July 22nd.

Three people were arrested Friday after an alleged harassment and stabbing incident. Shayna Howard was arrested and charged with Battery, Geoffrey Madison, who was stabbed after allegedly hitting Jeff Gibson, was arrested and charged with Residential Entry and Ed Diersen was charged with Assisting a Criminal.

North Judson Town Marshal, Doug Vessely, reminds residents that driving golf carts in town is against the law. All violators will be issued an ordinance ticket. No golf carts are to be driven on or across a state highway.

Culver Community School officials are moving ahead and planning for the coming school year. It has been reported that Tippecanoe Township may break away from Culver Community Schools after the Corporation announced the closure of Monterey Elementary School. Many of those students may go to Eastern Pulaski Schools.

Charles Barnett

Charles Barnett and Rhonda Gayheart were arrested Friday on preliminary charges of Burglary and Theft after they allegedly stole an XBox and a computer. They did pawn the XBox but were unsuccessful in pawning the computer.

Jeffrey Jacobs and Michael Mills of Winamac were arrested yesterday on preliminary charges of Possession of Paraphernalia and Possession of Marijuana after police were called to a campground in Pulaski County for suspicious activity.

Andy Howes

Classmates from all over the country will be attending Andy Howes’ Memorial Service in Knox on Tuesday, August 2nd at 7:00 p.m. at the Knox Community Center. Howes was missing in action in the Vietnam War. His remains are being transported back to Knox from Hawaii on Monday.

John Rupert and Charlotte Rupert of Knox were arrested after reportedly fleeing the scene of a property damage accident in Winamac. Both were charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance, among other charges.

Nathan VanDerAa

Federal charges have been filed against Nathan VanDerAa of Star City. He has been charged with two counts of Unlawful User of Controlled Substances in Possession of a Firearm and Ammunition and one count of Manufacture of a Controlled Substance. His arraignment hearing is on Monday, August 1st in U.S. District Court in South Bend.

James Campbell of Knox was arrested early Thursday morning after he failed to comply with police when officers ordered him to get out of his vehicle and away from loaded weapons. He was arrested on preliminary charges of Intimidation, Possession of Stolen Property, Carrying a Handgun without a Permit and Resisting Law Enforcement.
