Starke County Emergency Responders Called to Two Accidents Sunday

The Starke County Sheriff’s Department investigated two accidents on Sunday.

At 11:20 a.m., officers responded to a call of a vehicle in a water-filled ditch on State Road 8 and Range Road. The car landed on its roof in the ditch. The driver, Kaitlyn Vukelich of Schererville, and her four-year-old daughter were pulled from the vehicle by a passerby.

The pair were transported by Starke County EMS to IU Health Starke Hospital where they were treated and released.

The sheriff’s department applauded the quick response of Karry Palider of Chicago who saved the driver and her daughter from what could have been a more horrific outcome.

The sheriff’s department was assisted by the Knox City Police Department, Starke County EMS and the Knox-Center Township Fire Department.

Later in the afternoon, a motorcycle driver and a passenger were injured in an accident on State Road 10 and 550 South. Officers found that the motorcycle driver started to maneuver the bike through the curve and the tires slid in loose sand on the roadway. The motorcycle went down, throwing both the driver and the passenger off of the motorcycle. Neither occupants were wearing helmets. They were transported to IU Health Starke Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

In this accident, Starke County EMS and the Bass Lake Fire Department were called to the scene to assist the Starke County Sheriff’s Department.
