Oprah Winfrey Network to Feature Lisa Owens in ‘Breaking Down the Bars’ Program Tonight
The Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) will feature former Knox resident, Lisa Owens, tonight on the “Breaking Down the Bars”. The program features eight inmates incarcerated at the Rockville Correctional Center.
Owens, who is eligible for release this year because of a modification of her 40 year sentence, was convicted of shooting her husband, Jeff, while he was in the shower. The crime took place on May 18th, 2001. The case was heard before then- Starke Circuit Court Judge, David Matsey and was prosecuted by then-Starke County Prosecutor, Kim Hall. She plead guilty to Voluntary Manslaughter. The modification order was signed by Judge Richard Kickbush.
Owens is reportedly going to express remorse for the crime on the show tonight.
Since news of the airing of the program in January, there has been much reaction on our WKVI comment and discussion pages. Most have expressed the opinion that she should not be released. WKVI contacted a member of the Owens family for comment but they respectively declined to be interviewed.
The program will air at 8:00 p.m. CT tonight.

Jeff’s life was worth a a lot more than a few years and a smile. I never saw any remorse the night she calmly rode away with the arresting officer in in her trial or appearances.

we need to hear the real story

Just because she says something doesn’t mean its the real story and you can’t hear Jeff’s side because he is gone.

The REAL story “was” told if you were in court that day.
Guilty………

You should hear the story, and you should have seen the bruises. I don’t agree with murder, but I don’t think a woman should put up with abuse either.

to Anonmyous,
I lived in an abusive family my intire childhood to an extend no one could imagine. Yes, the bruises were shown on her and she even told people about the abuse but no one would help her or her kids. Did she kill her husband or those that turned away,No! She moved forward. She had three children of her own and raised another, most of her children have turned away from her in thier own ways. One has walked away completly, another bit her husband and in all types of trouble, the other became the protecter of his mother as the other that was raised there she became very reserved but very promising.
Does the mother of these children ever wish she did what Lisa did, most likely, espcially while the beatings where happening or when her children are going through rough times as she did, but she did not kill her husband.
Honestly, I’m not sure where I stand on this situation. If he did beat her, she has a long way to go to show her remorse! And he did not deserve to die or did she feel that was the only way she would feel safe if the beatings did happen.
I’m so sorry for both families. The sister says she is ready for her sister to move back into her life, but isn’t she scared too?
Everyone deserves another chance, if Jesus Chirst can forgive her, we should too!

What a bunch of bologna. We should forgive her?? That is not our job as a society. Our job is to make sure there is justice for murder victims like Jeff.
I just finished watching the episode where Lisa paints herself as a poor abused woman. When she recounted the story of what happened to put her in prison, she failed to mention that after she shot him she flew off to vegas for 3 days with her lover, or that when she got back, she went about her life like nothing ever happened. She even went to work!
I understand battered women kill their abusers, but do they go on a mini vaca to vegas with their lovers afterwards??? Do they light incense to get rid of the smell of rotting flesh??? Her actions AFTER the murder are more scary than the murder itself. I mean who does that???
The show said she is going to live with her sister. I hope her sister doesn’t live in knox, and I hope she never makes Lisa mad or she might find herself rotting in a tub just like Jeff.

I have learned that I cannot judge another person when I did not walk in thier shoes. I suffered abuse as a child, a family member suffered emotional/verbal abuse from a husband- every person reacts differently to the abuse. There are many reasons females don’t leave their abusers- most of it is the control the other person has over the female, wheter it be physical, emotional or verbal.

Lets all remember we will be judged one day for all we have done regardless if you have a DOC number or not. This is her burden to bear and nobody can ever say how they would react to abuse sometimes the mind just snaps and shuts down.Ask yourself how you would react if someone abused your child? Enough said if you feel an instant rage then you have answered the question!

IN men’s prison “everyone is innocent”. In women’s prison “everyone was abused”. Horse manure. Watching this show it’s obvious the women are putting on their fake faces in order to get sympathy.
