The Board of Directors of Drug and Tobacco Free Starke County met in Executive Session this week. According to Board President Judy Jelinek, the board will be meeting in an open session Wednesday, February 22nd, and will discuss the appointment of a financial committee and a personnel matter.

The appointment of a financial committee will be new for the organization as financial matters were handled by the state in the past. Quarterly reports were sent to the state by the local organization.

It’s assumed that the Drug and Tobacco Free Starke County organization has been looking into financial matters following the admission by the Drug and Tobacco Free Starke County Coalition Coordinator, Jennie Carter, that she had mishandled Tourism funds. Most of the mishandled money has reportedly been paid back.

According to Jelinek, Carter is still the Coalition Coordinator.

I enjoyed reading that “most of the money has been payed back”, and hearing that the person responsible for the THEFT is remaining in her position. Cronyism politics as usual in Starke County, self improvement encouraged(at our expense)!

The money has been mostly paid back. So what! all that means is she either almost got away with it or she has almost completed her restitution, now what is the rest of her sentence? Sorry but you can’t crack down hard on kids for a first time offense and give sweet old ladies a wink and a nod… County Gov’t better not jack this one up! It is an election year after all.

    Wait a minute.

We had an elected official in Starke county that was terminated for money that was lost then found

Then Mitch loses 300 million that we know about, lol.
    then supposedly was found.
Nothing happened to him, just HO HUM.

Now we have this lady admitting to stealing
    and no big deal???

Sounds like Our Elected County Official, got a raw deal???

Why was’nt this lady immediatlly put under arrest and taken into police custody? She deserves to serve at least a year in prison!

I’m glad to know that we as a county immediately released Linda Belork from her duties and banned her from the couthouse, even though she was never accused of stealing money, only bad bookkeeping. Yet this lady not only admits she stole the money and started to pay it back, she is still on the job. I constantly am trying to defend our county from outsiders that think we are a bunch of redneck hillbilllies, but boy our elected and appointed officials are making it hard for me.

The details haven’t been released, but I think most people are a little too fast with the condemnation.

She improperly transferred the money from group to another. Why hasn’t come out. Nor has it been revealed if she benefited personally from this transfer.

PLEASE, could we get some more information on what happened instead of just condemnation?

She personally reimbursed funds back into the account. Why would she do that if she did nothing wrong?

It was stated at the county commissioner’s meeting that she signed a letter admitting to taking the funds. The commissioners contacted the prosecutor and requested resignations from every member of that board. They are taking this matter seriously. It is the board that seems to be slapping her on the hand (if that) and allowing her to continue in her duties. Unfortunately, that is not a board the county controls.

Our local Gov’t leaders are showing NO CONSISTANCY in this matter, or any other. We had nearly a Million$$$ disappear, with only Mark Smith stating “it’s been accounted for”, when we’ve seen NO PROOF OR FIGURES. That situation cost 2 lives, DON’T TELL US IT WAS “ACCOUNTED FOR”. Then…you fire an ELECTED OFFICIAL for missing $$$ that WAS ACOUNTED FOR. And now, a woman has been caught stealing, AND NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE? She’s actually still in the office. This community is ludicrous.

In a previous story it stated that Nick Bourff was looking into this matter…..why have we not heard from him or his office ? This is turning into yet another fiasco. Hopefully all the facts will be examined and all will be held accountable if necessary. A previous response by a board member stated something about being “swept under the rug” seems they have gotten a good start. God Bless Starke Co.
