The Winamac Town Council had the first reading on several ordinances during their meeting Monday night.

Town Manager Jim Conner said one ordinance regulates snow removal at one’s residence.

“That will require everybody to remove the snow off the sidewalk in front of their houses,” said Conner. “If there is a fire hydrant there in the area, they will need to shovel that out also. There is a hardship exception that people can apply for.”

If a resident violates the ordinance in the town of Winamac, a fine will be assessed of not less than $25 and will not exceed $100. That fine will be assessed as long as the violation continues.

Another ordinance amends the monthly electric rates and charges for the Winamac municipal electric utility.

“We’ll be looking at about an eleven percent increase on the electric rates. The last electric rate increase we had was back in 2008 and even with the electric rate increase we’ll still be cheaper than NIPSCO’s residential rate and the surrounding REMCs. The public hearing for that ordinance will be at the Aug. 11 meeting.”

One final ordinance the council members looked at was one that establishes rules for use and conduct within the park facilities in Winamac. The parks will be closed from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. ET; no overnight camping is allowed; no off-road vehicles, snowmobiles or go-carts are allowed in the parks; no fireworks will be allowed; pets shall remain on a leash and owners must pick up after them; and the use of metal detectors is prohibited.
