Police officers who are participating in the annual Concerns of Police Survivor’s bicycle ride will be going through LaPorte today.

Officers will be arriving at 9 a.m. CT. They are riding around the perimeter of the state to help support families of officers who were killed in the line of duty and raise awareness of survivor issues.

This year’s ride will help assist the surviving families of the three officers who suffered fatal injuries while protecting and serving their communities and their oath of office in the line of duty.

Riders and support crews will be at the New Carlisle Cemetery at 9 a.m. where a brief ceremony will be held to honor the memory of LaPorte County Sheriff’s Deputy Neil Thompson. He was killed in the line of duty on Sept. 21, 1980. The group will then travel to LaPorte where they will have lunch at the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office Training Building on the property of the LaPorte County Fairgrounds.

The 1,000 mile trek is being completed by 66 riders. Twenty of those riders will arrive in LaPorte today.

This is the 12th year of the COPS bicycle ride. The ride will conclude on July 26 at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis.
