Fire Marshal Reminds Hoosiers to Check Smoke Alarms – Be Safe

Now is the time to make sure your smoke detectors are working and to place smoke detectors in your home if you have no smoke alarms in your home.

January, February, and March are common months for fires to occur since it’s the home heating season.

The Indiana State Fire Marshal’s office reminds you to install smoke alarms on every home’s level and they also should be placed near sleeping areas. Many firefighters will install smoke alarms or help you install them properly.

Smoke alarms should be tested every month and the batteries should be changed twice a year.

There are two types of alarms Ionization alarms and photoelectric alarms. Ionization alarms sound more quickly when fast moving fire occurs and photoelectric alarms are quicker at sensing smoldering, smoky fires. There are also special smoke alarms for those who are deaf or hard of hearing.
