AARP Driver Safety Program

The Marshall County Council on Aging is hosting the AARP Driver Safety Program at the Life Enrichment Center on Friday, May 18th, 2012 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. ET. Although the program is geared toward drivers over 50, all drivers of any age are encouraged to attend. In this course, you will learn defensive driving techniques, new traffic laws, how to deal with aggressive drivers, and how to handle problem situations. Completion the program qualifies drivers for discounts with many auto insurance carriers. The cost of this program is $12.00 for members (with card) and $14.00 for non-members. National Nursing Home Activities

This week is National Nursing Home Week. On Friday, May 18th, Miller's Merry Manor in Walkerton will have music bingo with Advanced Care Transport at 2:00 p.m. ET and the Teegarden Gospel Singers will provide entertainment at 7:00 p.m. ET. The Golden Living Center will have Western Day on May 18th. A cookout is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. and St. Peter's School will have a program at 1:00 p.m. A balloon launch will be at 1:30 p.m.

Annual Kiwanis Peanut Sale

The Plymouth Chapter of Kiwanis will be holding their annual peanut sale on Friday, May 18th and Saturday, May 19th. Friday’s sale will be from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. ET at the corner of Jefferson and Michigan Streets in Plymouth as well as at Kroger and Walmart in Plymouth. Saturday’s sale will be from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 pm ET at the same locations. Small bags of peanuts will be available for a free-will offering and members are encouraging supporters to be generous. This is one of the major fundraisers of the year for the Plymouth Kiwanis. Proceeds will be used to benefit youth programs and scholarships.

Fish Fry

A fish fry to benefit the Starke County Humane Society will be held Friday, May 18th from 4:30-7:00 p.m. CT at the Knox Moose Family Center. The ticket price is $8.00 and carryouts will be available.

Saturday, May 19

Fishing Tournament

A fishing tournament to benefit the Starke County Relay for Life will be held Saturday, May 19th from 6:00 a.m. to Noon CT at Bass Lake. Register or check-in at a boat launch or you may dock-side fish. Entry fee is $20 for adults and $10 for kids. Prizes will be awarded to the first, second and third place finishers and for three out of three heaviest fish. All proceeds will go to the Starke County Relay for Life.

Woof Studios

Woof Studios will be taking pet pictures at the Starke County Humane Society on Saturday, May 19th. Pet portraits are taken in the mobile studio that will be parked at the Humane Society. Multiple pets and people are welcome. The $10.00 sitting fee will be donated to the animal shelter. Call (574) 896-5060 to set up an appointment, or visit www.woofstudios.net.

Knox City-wide Yard Sale

The city-wide yard sale in the City of Knox is scheduled for Saturday, May 19th from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The permit fee will be waived for this day only. If you want a permit for additional days, the permit cost is $5.00 for one to two days or $10 for three or four days. The only signs permitted to be posted throughout the City are those provided at City Hall for $.50 each. The Knox Moose Family Center is sponsoring the event and breakfast and lunch will be provided in their parking lot. To be placed on the free map, call Danna Clary at 772-5712.

Kersting's Cycle Center Train Adventure Ride

Kersting's Cycle Center Train Adventure Ride is scheduled for Saturday, May 19th, 2012. Sign-up at Kersting's Cycle Center at 11:00 a.m. ET. The group ride leaves at Noon ET. The one hour scenic country motorcycle ride will be followed by lunch, served by A Step in Time, and a 45-minute train ride on the Hoosier Valley Railroad train. Cost is $15.00 per rider that that includes ride, lunch and train ride. This special event is sponsored by Kersting's Cycle Center and the Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum. Proceeds will benefit the Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund.

Bicycle Safety Rodeo

A bicycle safety rodeo will be held Saturday, May 19th from 10:00 a.m. to Noon CT in the parking lot at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1600 S. Heaton Street, Knox. During this event, kids will learn how to fit a helmet, to check bikes for safety and the rules of the road. Sno cones and a goodie bag will be given to each child. Armed Forces Day at Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum

Help support our troops on Armed Forces Day with a portion of every ticket sale being donated to the Freedom Alliance scholarship fund. A special motorcycle ride-in event is being held in conjunction with Kersting's Motorcycle. Ride aboard the Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum's popular tourist train as you take in the sites and sounds of rural life while traveling through the farmland of Northwest Indiana. See plenty of wildflowers, birds, butterflies and other wildlife. This trip will also take you across the Kankakee River bridge at English Lake.

Motorcycle Run

A motorcycle run to help send special needs children to Camp Riley will be held Saturday, May 19th, 2012 at Noon CT at the North Judson American Legion Post #92. Camp Riley enables children with physically debilitating diseases to participate in activities in which they are generally capable of doing. The ride begins at the North Judson American Legion Post at Noon. The cost is $20 per rider or $25 for a couple. There will be a poker run, food, an auction and live music. Fish Fry

The annual fish fry at the Pretty Lake Trinity United Methodist Church, 8985 Highway 17 in Plymouth will be held Saturday, May 19th, 2012 from 4:00-7:30 p.m. ET. Ralph Smith will fry the fish and the ladies of the church will provide homemade salads and desserts. Ticket price is $8.50 for adults and $4.00 for children ages 6-11. Carryouts will be available.

Alumni Weekend Carillon Recital

John Gouwens, Carillonneur of the Culver Academies, will present the second recital for 2012 on the 51-bill Gillett and Johnston carillon in the tower of the Memorial Chapel on Saturday, May 19th, at 4:00 p.m. ET. The recital falls on Culver's Alumni Weekend so the program will consist of pieces written by or dedicated to Culver's carillonneurs over the years.
