Bryant Larkin
Our Tyler Roth/WKVI Athlete of the Week for this week is Bryant Larkin, a member of the Boys Golf Team at Winamac High School.
Bryant led his team to the Bi-County Tournament championship with a personal best score of 73 on the unpredictable Moss Creek Golf Club course, two strokes better than teammate Adam Gruenig, who he had been chasing throughout the early season to earn the #1 spot in the lineup. The Warriors followed Bryant’s lead, shooting 323 to beat second place North Judson-San Pierre 73 strokes.
The veteran Junior followed his Bi-County win by taking medalist honors with a 40 leading his team to a 168-190 win over Knox on the long Hamlet course.
Coach Scott Roudebush credits consistency born of maturity with Larkin’s recent success and predicts even better results as the weather gets better in Northern Indiana.

Brittany Fletcher
Our Tyler Roth/WKVI Athlete of the Week for this Week is Brittany Fletcher, a member of the Girls Tennis Team at Knox High School.
Brittany led her team to a 3-2 victory over LaPorte in the first-ever meeting between those two schools. Playing at #3 Singles, the Sophomore standout beat her opponent 6-1, 6-4 for her third win of the season at the Varsity level.
In wins over North Judson, Triton and LaPorte, she has not lost a set and has won a total of 36 games while only giving up 9.
Brittany played several matches at #2 doubles as a Freshman last year, and in her lone start at #1 singles, she beat conference foe LaVille.
Coach Mark Krom credits Brittany’s consistency for her success in the early season. She was also a member of the Girls basketball team last winter.

Kendall Gardner
Our Tyler Roth/WKVI Athlete of the Week for this Week is Kendall Gardner, a member of the Girls Track Team at North Judson- San Pierre High School.
Kendall led her team to victory in a 4-way meet in the opening meet of the season and a close second place finish in a 3-way meet with Knox and Winamac, by dominating the distance races.
In the opening meet against Knox, Kouts and North White, she had personal bests in the 1600 with a time of 5:44, just 4 seconds off the school record, and with a time of 12:33 in the 3200, eleven seconds away from the school record. She was also a member of the victorious 4X800 and 4X400 relay teams. She also won the 1600, 3200 and 4X400 relay as the Lady Jays lost by 3 to Winamac in the second meet of the season.
The veteran Senior has qualified for the Regional the last two seasons as she has been named the Most Valuable Runner both years. She is also a 3-year member of the Cross Country team, advancing to the Regional and being named Most Valuable Runner all three years.

Logan Lionberger
Our Tyler Roth/WKVI Athlete of the Week for this Week is Logan Lionberger, a member of the Baseball Team at South Central High School.
Logan pitched a 1-hitter in his first varsity pitching start for the Satellites in a 9-0 win over the Knox Redskins Wednesday afternoon.
The Sophomore right hander had a no-hitter going into the 6th inning before giving up a single and being taken out for the final inning. Before leaving, he struck out 7, and gave up only 2 bases on balls.
Logan also contributed a double and scored a run for the Satellites, who won their second game of the young season.

Adam Gruenig
Our Tyler Roth/WKVI Athlete of the Week for this Week is Adam Gruenig, a member of the Boys Basketball Team at Winamac High School.
Adam helped lead his team to a strong Sectional Runner-up finish to the 2012-13 basketball season with the best scoring output of his career, including a perfect shooting night in the Semi-final matchup against Hebron.
The 5-9 Sophomore started his most consistent stretch of the season with 15 points in the regular season finale 53-44 victory over Rensselaer, then took that momentum into the Sectional where he scored 12 points in a surprisingly easy 73-52 win over North Judson. His Capstone performance of the season came in the 74-56 win over defending champion Hebron when he led his team in scoring with 19 points on perfect 5-for-5 shooting from 3-point range and a perfect 4-for-4 at the Free Throw line.
His strong finish on the season gave Adam a 7.8 points per game average in his first varsity season for Coach Kyle Johnson.

Drew McKay
Our Tyler Roth/WKVI Athlete of the Week for this week is Drew McKay, a member of the Boys Basketball Team at West Central High School.
Drew helped lead his team to a major upset victory over Tri-County in the opening game of the 1-A Sectional. The Trojans delivered a shocking 56-54 loss to the Cavaliers in Overtime that avenged a 45 point loss to Tri-County just 3 weeks before. On of the big differences was McKay returning to the lineup after missing 8 games with an injury.
The 5-11 Junior scored 17 points, hauled down 3 rebounds and dished out 3 assists as the Trojans advanced to the Semi-Final Round. Then he delivered 15 points in a 37-33 win over South Newton that put West Central into the Sectional Championship game.
Drew’s comeback from his injury had started the last game of the regular season when he led his team with 16 points in a 56-37 win over Demotte Covenant Christian that broke an 8-game losing streak.

Jessica Averone
Our Tyler Roth/WKVI Athlete of the Week for this Week is Jessica Averone, a member of the Girls Basketball Team at Oregon-Davis High School.
Jesse helped lead her team to a Regional Runner-up finish to the 2012-13 basketball season with some of the most consistent play in the tournament.
In the opening Regional victory over Morgan Township, her 10 first half points helped spark the Lady Bobcats to a 21-2 start that led to a 61-39 win. She finished the game with 15 points, 9 rebounds, a 3-pointer, 4 of 6 free throw shooting and 4 steals. Her effort helped propel the Cats iin to the Regional Championship game, where the 5-9 Junior scored 15 points and hauled in 3 rebounds in a disappointing loss to the defending State Champion Ft. Wayne Canterbury.
A 3-year starter for Coach Terry Minix’ Lady Bobcats, Jesse ended the season just 14 points shy of the 1,000 career point mark.

Alivia Kruger
Our Tyler Roth/WKVI Athlete of the Week for this Week is Alivia Kruger, a member of the Girls Basketball Team at West Central High School.
Alivia helped lead her team to its third consecutive Sectional Championship with consistent scoring and intimidating defense.
The 5-11 Junior led her team to a 37-17 win over Pioneer in the Tournament opener, a 39-19 victory over Tri-County in the semi-final round and a 40-29 win over Caston in the Championship game. Alivia was the leading scorer for the Lady Trojans with 29 points, including 10 of 16 at the Free Throw line, and added 9 rebounds as the Lady Trojans completed the 3-peat. She also was effective in using her long reach and quick footwork on defense to force opponents into numerous mistakes as the Lady Trojans advanced to the Regional.

Matt Hurford
Our Tyler Roth/WKVI Athlete of the Week for this Week is Matt Hurford, a member of the Wrestling Team at Culver School.
Matt won his 4th straight Sectional and Regional weight-class championships and advanced for the fourth year in a row to Semi-state competition.
Wrestling at 182 pounds, the veteran Senior has built a perfect 40-0 record as he sought to advance to State competition for the third time in his high school career. He has put together an astounding record over 4 years of 163 wins and only 9 losses. He finished 5th in the State last year as a Junior after having made the trek to Indianapolis as a Freshman as well.
A four-year letter winner in Football and a 3-year letterman in Track, Matt seeks to become the second State Champion for the Cavaliers in the last 3 years.

Logan Wuethrich
Our Tyler Roth/WKVI Athlete of the Week for this week is Logan Wuethrich, a member of the Wrestling Team at West Central High School.
Logan was one of three Trojan Wrestlers to advance to regional competition when he captured First Place in the 170-pound weight class at the Twin Lakes Sectional. As weight class Champion, he advanced for the second year in a row to the Logansport Regional.
As a Junior, Logan went all the way to the semi-state after finishing 2nd in the Sectional and 3rd in Regional Competition.
A four-year letter winner for Coach Kenny Nielsen, Logan is the definition of a student –athlete, ranking in the top 10 of his class academically, serving as President of his Class, a member of numerous on-campus clubs and as a member of the Cross Country and baseball teams.

Jake Strong
Jake was named the Most Valuable Player in the Bi-County Tourney last week after leading the Falcons to the Tourney Championship! With outstanding shooting, great rebounding and consistent floor play, the 6-2 Sophomore led the Falcons to a 62-46 win over Oregon-Davis in the opener, a 52-39 upset win over favored Culver in the Semi-Final round and hit the go-ahead shot with 12 seconds to go, then sealed the 34-31 victory over LaVille with 2 free throws with 4 second left in the Championship game.
Jake was the picture of consistency scoring 16, 13 and 6 points in the 3 wins, shooting 13 of 22 from the field, 8 of 10 from the free throw line, while hauling down 14 rebounds and dishing out 10 assists. He also played outstanding defense, which was the key to the final 2 wins.
Jake is the leading scorer for the Falcons, and also plays football and golf.

Collin Stevens
Our Tyler Roth/WKVI Athlete of the Week for this week is Collin Stevens, a member of the Boys Basketball Team at Culver High School.
Collin was one of the driving forces as the Cavaliers beat 12th-ranked Triton for the first time in 8 years! The 5-9 Senior point guard played it tough on both ends of the court, scoring 15 points, dishing out 4 assists and playing a key role in the high intensity defense that was the difference in the win.
Collin was especially good in the clutch, hitting 4 of 5 three-point attempts in the 46-42 come-from-behind victory that gave the Cavs momentum going into the Bi-County Tournament.
A four-year starter for Coach Kyle Elliott, Collin is a 3-sport athlete for the Cavaliers, also starting at quarterback for the football team for 4 years.

Curt Scherer
Our Tyler Roth/WKVI Athlete of the Week for this week is Curt Scherer, a member of the Boys Basketball Team at Knox High School.
Curt had the best game of his Varsity career as he helped the Redskins to a 71-67 triple overtime win over the Winamac Warriors as the ‘Skins broke a 7-game losing streak.
The 6-2 Junior scored a career high 19 points, pulled down 5 rebounds, hit two 3-pointers and drilled 5 of 6 at the free throw line. In addition, he handled the point guard position most of the game and did not commit a foul.
Curt was especially good down the stretch, scoring 14 of his 19 points in the second half and not having a single turnover in the 3 overtimes.

Haley Collings
Our Tyler Roth/WKVI Athlete of the Week for this week is Haley Collings, a member of the Girls Basketball Team at Oregon-Davis High School.
Haley helped lead her team to a 65-55 win over 6th-ranked Triton with one of the best games of her Varsity career. The 5-10 Junior had a double-double against the Lady Trojans, scoring 13 points and hauling down 13 rebounds in a tough road game in Bourbon. This followed a 17-point performance in a 60-31 win over New Prairie in the final game of the South Bend Washington Tournament.
Haley has scored in double figures in 4 of her last 7 games, upping her scoring average from 6.5 point a game in the first 7 games of the season to nearly 10.5 in the last 7 games. Her efforts have caused her Coach, Terry Minix, to credit her as one of the bright spots for the Lady Cats in an otherwise disappointing Holiday Tourney outing in South Bend, which saw them lose back-to-back games.
Haley is a 3-year regular for the Lady Bobcats.
