Claire Collins 9/4/14

Our Tyler Roth/WKVI Athlete of the Week for this week is Claire Collins, a member of the cross country team at Winamac High School.

Claire broke the Midwest Conference girls cross country record in leading her team to the title in the last-ever cross country meet in the MWC due to the disbanding of the Conference after this year. Her time of 19:37 beat the previous record of 19:40 and will forever stand as the Midwest Conference mark.

The diminutive Sophomore also established the Winamac School Record with her effort, and her conference win added to her season’s accomplishments which include the Bi-County championship and a 2nd place finish in the prestigious New Prairie Invitational.

Claire is the daughter of Jill and Adam Collins and will be featured on a future “Saturday Sportsline with Nathan Welter” on K99.3 and will have a featured picture and story on wkvi.com.

Congratulations to Claire Collins of Winamac High School, our “Tyler Roth/WKVI Athlete of the Week”

Kyleigh Werner 9/27/14

Our Tyler Roth/WKVI Athlete of the Week for this week is Kyleigh Werner, a member of the cross country and golf teams at South Central High School.

Kyleigh had a weekend most student/athletes could only dream of, winning the Class A Division of the gigantic New Prairie Invitational Cross Country meet on Saturday after playing in the Girls Golf Sectional on Friday and being named Homecoming Queen on Friday night.

The veteran senior was a first year member of the golf team and shot a respectable 114 on the rugged BeachWood course in LaPorte. After being crowned Homecoming Queen at halftime of the Satellites football game on Friday night, she got up early on Saturday to win her third consecutive New Prairie championship.

Her cross country championship didn’t come easy, having to come from back in the pack in the last half mile to finish in her season-best time of 19:30.

Her golf coach, Jud Tolmen, and cross country coach, her Mother, Rachel Werner, agreed that her joining golf for the first time gave her a relief from running and made her more effective on the course.

An outstanding classroom student, Kyleigh is hopeful of advancing out of the cross country Sectional this year, just as she did in the track Sectional last Spring.

Kyleigh is the daughter of Dwayne and Rachel Werner and will be featured next week here on the “Saturday Sportsline with Nathan Welter” on K99.3 and will have a featured picture and story on wkvi.com.

Congratulations to Kylie Werner of South Central High School, our “Tyler Roth/WKVI Athlete of the Week”

Preston Hansel 9/20/14

Our Tyler Roth/WKVI Athlete of the Week for this week is Preston Hansel, a member of the Football Team at Culver High School.

Preston is the first ever recipient of this award for an outstanding performance in a losing effort, but his effort in the Class 1-A Cavaliers 56-33 loss to Class 4-A 11th-ranked New Prairie was one for the record books!

The 6-1, 185-pound Quarterback led his team in virtually every statistical category on both sides of the ball. He was 13-of-32 in passing for 234 yards and 2 touchdowns with no interceptions. He also rushed the ball 38-times for 241 yards and 2 more touchdowns and scored on a 2-point conversion attempt as the Cavaliers jumped out to a first quarter lead as the Cav’s beat the powerful Cougars in virtually every statistical category except for the one on the scoreboard.

Not only did the veteran Senior account for 475 of his team’s 491 total offensive yards and 26 of the team’s 33 points, but he converted on 10 of 20 third-and-fourth down conversion attempts and ALSO led the defense in tackles from his strong safety position with 5 plus an assist and a tackle for loss!

While the team lost, Preston showed great Senior leadership in turning in one of the greatest, if not THE greatest individual performance ever seen at Culver High School!

Preston is the son of Amy and Scott Hansel and will be featured next week here on the “Saturday Sportsline with Nathan Welter” on K99.3 and will have a featured picture and story on wkvi.com.

Congratulations to Preston Hansel of Culver High School, our “Tyler Roth/WKVI Athlete of the Week”

While the weather conditions didn’t allow her to come close to her season-best time of 21:10, Justene was helped by teammates Dana Wherrett in 2nd place and Erin O’Connor in 6th to score 36 points, beating out Gary West with 43 and Knox with 60.

Just a Freshman, Justene also is looking forward to participating in basketball and track for the Lady Tigers this year.

Our Tyler Roth/WKVI Athlete of the Week for this week is Mavrick Pitts, a member of the Football Team at North Judson-San Pierre High School.

Mavrick led his team to a 40-14 victory over arch-rival Knox with outstanding play on both sides of the ball. Offensively, the 5-10, 173-pound running back accounted for 22 of his teams points, rushing for 3 second-half touchdowns that turned a close game into a route. His 14 and 10 yard scores were topped by a 70-yard sprint for a score as he carried the ball 12 times for 164 yards.

In addition, the veteran Senior kicked 2 extra points and ran for a 2-point conversion as the Jays evened their record at 1-1.

Defensively Mavrick was the second leading tackler on the squad with 5 stops.

Mavrick will be featured next week here on the “Saturday Sportsline with Nathan Welter” on K99.3 and will have a featured picture and story on wkvi.com.

Parker Fritz 8/30/14

Our Tyler Roth/WKVI Athlete of the Week for this week is Parker Fritz, a member of the Football Team at West Central High School.

Parker led his team to a 34-0 upset of the Culver Cavaliers on opening night of the new season, helping his team send a resounding statement to their former Head Coach, Darren Rodriguez, now the Coach of the Cavaliers, and giving the Trojans new Head Coach, Marc Hall, his first win at West Central.

The 5-9, 170-pound Senior had a career night on both sides of the ball. On offense, he carried the ball 16 times for 242 yards and three touchdowns and also picked up 34 yards on a pass reception.

On defense, Parker again showed great leadership with 6 tackles, including one for loss, one for a quarterback sack and one that forced a fumble!

Parker is the son of Jamie and Shannon Fritz and will be featured next week here on the “Saturday Sportsline with Nathan Welter” on K99.3 and will have a featured picture and story on wkvi.com.

Gabby Behny 8/23/14

Our first Tyler Roth/WKVI Athlete of the Week for the 2014-15 season is Gabby Behny, a member of the Girls Golf Team at Winamac High School.

Gabby led her team to the Bi-County Girls Golf Tournament Championship last weekend copping Medalist honors in the Starke-Pulaski County shootout. After a slow start with a 50 on the front 9 at the challenging Moss Creed Country Club Course, she put together a 42 on the back 9 to lead her team to the championship for the first time in 3 years.

The Sophomore had to fight for the #1 spot on her team and gained that spot by shooting in the 40’s for 3 consecutive meets to open the season. She is also a member of the Winamac Softball team.

Gabby is the daughter of John and LeeAnne Behny and will be featured next week here on “The Saturday Sportsline with Nathan Welter” on K99.3 and will have a featured picture and story on wkvi.com.

Congratulations to Gabby Behny of Winamac High School, our “Tyler Roth/WKVI Athlete of the Week”
