The Culver Town Council met in a work session Tuesday afternoon to discuss the 2018 budget.
Council President Ginny Bess Munroe commented that every department worked hard to trim $17,000 from next year’s budget. The budget will be published with the public hearing on the budget set for a modified meeting date of Wednesday, Sept. 27.
Knox Clerk-Treasurer Jeff Houston presented the Knox City Council with updates about various grants during their meeting Tuesday evening. Houston has gone through the proper channels to apply for a grant that hasn’t been utilized by the city in a few years. Continue reading
The Knox Board of Public Works discussed a proposal for services to conduct a stormwater separation project in the alley between Washington Street and Lake Street, west of Main Street.
The project will include installing a new storm line in the alley and abandoning the existing storm sewer connections into the current sanitary sewer. The lines would be rerouted into the new storm sewer.
The Knox Community School Board hopes to motivate school bus drivers to take on extra-curricular driving trips with a pay increase they implemented during their meeting earlier this week. Before the pay increase, the rate of pay for field trip drivers was only about 65 cents more than minimum wage. Continue reading
A golf cart rally at 6 p.m. tonight will kick off the 31st Annual Mill Pond Festival. Line up for the rally will take place in front of the clubhouse at 100 Mill Pond Road in Union Mills. Food vendors, craft booths and a beer garden will be open tonight, tomorrow and Sunday.
Saturday festivities start at 8 a.m. with the Lions Club 5K and skeet shoot pre-qualification. Skeet shoot finals are at 1.p.m. The parade will start at the fire station and commence at 10 a.m. followed by an opening ceremony at 10:30 a.m. Canoe rides and games will be available and the beer garden opens at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.
More than one-thousand people from various cities and states will gather this weekend for fun and fundraising at the 16th annual Tour de La Porte walking, running and cycling event sponsored by the Healthcare Foundation of La Porte. 100 percent of proceeds from the event go to benefit local cancer patients directly. The money can assist with things like treatment, medication and wigs as well as in town and out of town transportation costs and even child care. Continue reading
Funeral services for David Little, 65, of Knox are Sunday, August 27 at 2 p.m. at M.C. Smith Funeral Home, with visitation there from noon until the time of the service.
The man accused of killing a Starke County man in March will be in Starke Circuit Court today for a final pre-trial and plea agreement deadline hearing.
Upgrades to the Starke County Courthouse elevator are a step closer to moving ahead. The county commissioners voted Monday to submit a grant application to the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs, after they sent in a letter of intent last month.
Arens Field is seeing the benefits from some recent upgrades, and a few more improvements may be coming. Thanks to federal and state grant funding, the airport was able to install a new fuel system last year giving pilots access to both jet fuel and low-lead fuel 24 hours a day.
The Town of North Judson saved almost $145,000 by rejecting the first bid it got for the demolition of 205 and 207 Lane Street. That’s according to Clerk-Treasurer Alicia Collins.
The Culver Town Council considered the first reading of an ordinance that creates the Culver Economic Development Commission, a board that can approve residential tax abatements.
The commission will have three members: one appointed by the Marshall County Council, the second appointed by the Culver Town Council President and the third appointed by town council. The years are staggered with the town council president appointee serving three years, the county council appointee serving two years and the town council appointee serving one year. After those terms expire, the successor will serve a four year term. Qualified members can be a county resident, a business owner in Culver or work in town of Culver.
Oregon-Davis school administrators reviewed the corporation’s revamped summer school program with the school board Monday. Continue reading
Students and teachers at Knox Community Schools will not be in the classrooms on Friday, September 1st but thanks to technology, class will still be in session. The school corporation will be testing their eLearning system that will allow teachers to post assignments and students to access them in the case of inclement weather. Continue reading
During the Knox City Council meeting earlier this week, Mayor Dennis Estok informed the board that the required permit to build bathrooms and a new concession stand at Wythogan Park has been acquired. Construction on those facilities will not begin until the fall. Continue reading
The Knox Board of Public Works opened bids Wednesday morning for the demolition of 420 Maple Drive and 322 W. Spruce Street.
Three companies submitted bids for both structures. Mark Milo had a total bid of $17,840, Jackson Trucking and Excavating submitted a total bid of $18,998 while Chem Check, Inc. submitted a total bid of $43,000.
With an increase in skimming devices being discovered at gas stations this year, AAA warns drivers to be extra cautious about paying at the pump. Unfortunately, this could happen to anybody; AAA Public Affairs Manager Greg Seiter had his card skimmed at a gas station on the south side of Indianapolis just a few weeks ago. Continue reading

Private graveside services are planned for Carol S. Copeland Boyd, 89, of Winamac. Visitation is Sunday, Aug. 27 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. ET at the Frain Mortuary in Winamac.
