CDC Urges Vaccination as Flu Season Approaches

The arrival of fall also marks the beginning of flu season. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the best way to protect yourself from the disease is to get a flu vaccine each year by the end of October.

They recommend that everyone six months of age and older gets a flu shot, with the only exception being those with severe allergies to vaccine ingredients. The CDC is also easing recommended restrictions for those with egg allergies. However, they should talk to their doctor before getting the flu shot. So should anyone who’s not feeling well.

Those at particular risk of developing more severe flu symptoms include children under the age of five, those age 65 and older, pregnant women, as well as those with lung and heart disease.

Beyond getting vaccinated, the CDC also recommends taking a few steps to prevent the spread of germs. These include avoiding contact with people who are sick, staying home when you’re not feeling well, covering your mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing, washing your hands often, and avoiding touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
