A train versus car collision has led to the death of a LaPorte County woman.

The incident occurred around 7:30 a.m. at the Tyler Street rail crossing in LaPorte. According to police, a red 2009 Ford Truck being driven by 43-year-old Tricia White entered the rail crossing area when the arms came down to notify motorists of an oncoming train.

The truck allegedly became stuck between the arms according to information released by LaPorte County authorities. At that time, White and her 10-year-old son exited the vehicle. The child was able to escape the general vicinity of the crossing, but while White exited the car, she did not clear the space.

The train struck the car on the tracks – which then proceeded to hit White. She was pronounced dead at the scene by the LaPorte County Coroner.

The child was taken to an area hospital for treatment and evaluation and was released to the custody of a family member.
