Mill Creek Home Burglarized, Armed Relative Intervenes

LaPorte County authorities are investigating after a reported burglary to an elderly woman’s home on Wednesday.

The incident occurred in the 1500 North block of County Road 850 East near the town of Mill Creek. Officers arrived on scene just after 1:30 p.m. It was learned by investigators that the woman answered a knock at the door and began speaking with a black male who was inquiring about trimming tree branches on the property.

It was further learned that the woman’s brother-in-law, who lives just up the road was also approached by the individuals who claimed to be lost and were asking for directions to State Road 2.

When the suspects allegedly traveled in the opposite direction from State Road 2, the man became concerned for his relative, retrieving a handgun and following the car toward his sister-in-law’s home.

The man arrived on scene to see the suspects in the living room and fleeing the home. As he chased the alleged perpetrators outside, he pointed a firearm at the suspects and ordered them to stop, but they fled nonetheless.

The woman reported to authorities that about $2,000 had been stolen from the home. Sheriff’s detectives in LaPorte County are investigating whether similar incidents have occurred in St. Joseph County. They’re asking anyone with information to contact the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department.
