Local School Corporations Crafting 2017 Spending Plans

School corporations across the state are crafting their spending plans for 2017. Budgets are due to the state for final approval in October, which means public hearings will soon be taking place.

The Oregon-Davis School Board has already completed their work sessions and plans to publish their draft budget in the Aug. 18th edition of The Leader. Their budget hearing will take place Sept. 12th, with adoption Oct. 10th.

The Knox Community School Board will conduct their budget hearing on Sept. 19th and adopt a spending plan on Oct. 3rd.

The North Judson-San Pierre School Board has a budget work session scheduled Monday evening. Superintendent Dr. Annette Zupin says corporation officials will be presenting a an overview of the proposed 2017 general fund, debt, pension/severance, capital projects, transportation, bus replacement and rainy day fund budgets.

She stresses the budgets are only proposals, as tax rates are preliminary estimates and student enrollment data isn’t finalized until the September ADM count. No action will be taken Monday night.

The administration will request permission from the school board at the Aug. 16th meeting to advertise the capital projects and bus replacement plans in the local newspapers. They will also ask permission to submit the 2017 N.J.-S.P. budget to the Starke County Council for consideration at their Sept. 16th meeting. The county’s fiscal body has to adopt the budget since the school board is appointed.
