Knox Council to Conduct Hearing on Grant Application

Knox Wastewater Treatment PlantThe Knox City Council will conduct a public hearing on a proposed grant application at the start of their meeting tonight. The city is applying for a $600,000 community development block grant from the state Office of Community and Rural Affairs to pay for upgrades to the wastewater treatment plant. Much of the infrastructure there is more than 20 years old. The grant carries an anticipated local match of $1.3 million.

In addition to the hearing, the council will consider the 2017 salary ordinance on second reading. They will also revisit the stop sign assessment shared at their last meeting. It was completed last month by the street department after issues were raised about the lack of signs on Bridge Street at Wythogan Park.

The assessment recommends signs be added at Bridge and Mound and Bridge and Water Streets, as well as on Council Street at Airway Drive, South Fisher Street at Bender Drive, Lambert Street at North Fisher Street, Lambert Street at Portland Street, Bridge Street at Water Street and Bridge Street at Mound Street. An unspecified number of signs are also recommended on Main Street. The council tabled the matter at their last meeting in order to further assess those needs.

Tonight’s Knox City Council meeting starts at 7 p.m.
