Knox to Begin Golf Cart Ordinance Enforcement

The Knox Police Department will begin enforcing the city’s golf cart ordinance today. That means golf carts operated within the city limits must have either a valid city or county-issued permit and be operated by a licensed driver, unless a waiver is granted by the city council. So far they’ve approved two.

Golf carts must be equipped with headlights, taillights, rearview mirrors and slow-moving vehicle signs. Additionally they must have at least liability insurance. Also seating is limited to the manufacturer’s recommended capacity. Stickers will be issued for either daytime only or daytime/nighttime operation.

State law prohibits the operation of golf carts on highways, and they cannot be driven on sidewalks or walking trails. Golf cart owners will get copies of the city’s ordinance when they register their carts.

Anyone who needs a golf cart permit can call the Knox City Police Department at 574-772- 4122.
