Tippencanoe River Restrictions Lifted Following Diesel Spill

Spill2The diesel fuel that spilled into the Tippecanoe River a week ago has been cleaned up, according to officials in Pulaski County. They advise booms that were deployed across the river have been removed, and there are currently no navigational barriers.

Last Friday’s spill affected the area four miles south of Tippecanoe River State Park in Pulaski County.

There are no restrictions on the river, but state and local environmental and emergency response officials recommend people use universal precautions. These include cleaning with soap and water as soon as possible after contact with river water from swimming, boating, fishing, tubing, kayaking or canoeing.

They add the rise and fall of river water could cause a periodic sheen on the water and say those areas should be avoided. The Indiana Department of Environmental Management will continue to monitor the situation.

Loehmer Ag Products has opened insurance claims related to the spill so those affected can submit their information for possible reimbursement.
