ISDH Promotes Safety As West Nile Season Progresses

Mosquitoes are out, and Indiana state health officials are encouraging Hoosiers to protect themselves from possible health consequences.

The Indiana State Department of Health says an increase in West Nile virus activity has prompted the warnings. On July 15th, one human case of West Nile virus was confirmed in Marion County. Batches tested in Marion, Hamilton, Jennings, and Benton counties have also tested positive for the virus. The increase is expected to continue as the summer months progress.

To keep yourself protected, residents should avoid being outdoors in the late afternoon and early morning, apply insect repellant, and cover exposed skin with long sleeves or pants.

Environmental steps can also be taken such as discarding old tires, pots, cans, and other containers that can hold water. Cleaning clogged roof gutters can also help prevent breeding grounds from forming.

West Nile virus can cause fever, body aches, and rash. To some, the disease may be deadly, affecting the nervous system or brain activity.
