It’s crunch time for the Town of Culver when it comes to preparing for a visit by state officials for consideration as an Indiana stellar community.

Culver has worked for months to identify projects, locate matching funds, and assemble an application for the designation. Culver was named one of three finalists earlier this year along with Corydon and Union City following an initial application round. A steering committee has been working to complete the second phase of the application since.

A work session was held on Thursday amongst members of the Town Council to update those involved with the town on the application, and to ensure all questions about the projects are answered prior to a visit by state government officials.

Stellar Communities not only helps a community prepare planning and development projects, it also provides grant application assistance and priority funding. Previous winners have received millions of dollars in state grant investments.

A presentation practice session is also scheduled prior to the July 21st visit by state officials. Culver says they will either transport the group by bus or by golf carts to each of the sites identified in the plan. Local economic development officials and certain elected representatives have been invited to attend the formal presentation on Thursday.

This is the first year Culver has applied for the designation. According to past discussions, communities will apply for several years in a row prior to being named a finalist.

The state expects to announcement the winner of this year’s Indiana Stellar Community designation sometime in August.
