The Town of Winamac is formalizing a list of uses for the $194,000 the town received in Local Option Income Tax funds from the state. During Monday’s town council meeting, Town Manager Brad Zellers recommended that Winamac buy a new leaf machine with some of the money.

He says the town’s current machine is nearing the end of its useful life and has no trade-in value. Zellers estimates a replacement would cost about $50,000. The town council Monday voted to allow him to begin seeking bids.

Of the $194,000 distributed to the Winamac, a quarter of that amount has been placed in the town’s Rainy Day Fund. Once that and the cost of the new leaf machine are taken into account, Zellers says at least $90,000 should remain, to use for the state’s Community Crossings program, which provides matching grant funds for street projects. Zellers hopes to be able to pave George Street, as part of that effort.
