LaPorte Police Department to Crack Down on Aggressive Drivers

The latest LaPorte Police Department public safety campaign targets aggressive drivers. The Operation Pull Over-funded patrols start today and continue through June 24. Officers will be looking for drivers committing dangerous moving violations that cause or directly contribute to traffic crashes.

LaPorte Police Captain Tom Heath says 2015 statistics indicate four dangerous driving actions are factors in two-thirds of crashes.  They include stop sign/automatic signal violations and failure to yield; following too closely; unsafe backing and unsafe speed or driving too fast for conditions.

June is the traditional start of the summer vacation travel season. Heath says it’s a good time to reinforce the “safety approach” first to driving. He says officers will also be cracking down on those who break traffic laws to ensure the safety of children who are playing outside.

Operation Pull Over is a traffic safety grant program funded by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration and administered by the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute. The goal is to reduce traffic crashes injuries and fatalities by promoting passenger restraint use and supporting impaired and dangerous driving enforcement.
