The Knox-Center Township Fire Department will soon have some new rescue equipment thanks to a grant from Norfolk Southern Corporation. Railroad officials presented Knox Fire Chief Kenny Pfost a check for $1,000. He says it’s earmarked for cold water rescue equipment.

“Throughout the winter months, we have several instances where, particularly when the roads are bad, vehicles will end up in the ditch or in the river,” Pfost said. “We have to go out and sometimes get people out. A lot of times people are out and we just have to go down and help the wrecker company get hooked up to the car and everything like that. Nonetheless, it will help us in our capabilities when that time comes.”

The safety grant is one of several awarded throughout Norfolk Southern’s Chicago District. It includes portions of Ohio and Indiana. Knox-Center Township Firefighter Steve Berendt works for Norfolk Southern and told his fellow firefighters about the grant.
