IRS Issues Warning About Scams, Following Orlando Shooting

Those looking to help the victims of the recent mass-shooting in Orlando are urged to beware of possible fake charity scams. The Internal Revenue Service says it’s common for scammers to take advantage of people’s generosity following these types of events.

However, the IRS says there are a few ways to keep yourself safe and make sure your money’s being used responsibly: Only give money to a recognized charity. If you’re unsure if an organization’s legitimate, you can verify it using the Exempt Organizations Select Check at IRS.gov.

Also, be on the lookout for fake charities using names that are similar to recognized organizations or websites that try to copy those of legitimate charities. Make your contribution by check or credit card instead of cash, for additional security and documentation for tax records.

Never give out personal financial information like Social Security, credit card, and bank account numbers or passwords to anyone asking for a donation. That information may be used to steal a donor’s money and identity.

More information about making tax-deductible charitable donations may be found on the IRS website.
