Walorski Responds to Hamlet Railroad Inquiry

Hamlet officials remain hopeful repairs will soon be made to the rough railroad crossing on Starke Street. They reached out to U.S. Rep. Jackie Walorski for assistance. In a letter dated May 10, 2016, she advised an inspector from the Federal Railroad Administration’s Indianapolis Field Office has checked the tracks and found them to be in compliance with the agency’s regulations.

However, the road surface adjacent to the rails is not governed by the FRA. The Chicago, Fort Wayne & Eastern Railroad operates the line. Town officials say they recently did some patching but have yet to announce any long-term repair plans.

Hamlet Town Board President Dave Kesvormas notes the CF&E has already made repairs in Porter and LaPorte Counties this year. He’s hopeful they will continue eastward and do some work in Starke County as well.
