Transportation Plans Finalized as Culver Intercession Begins

Culver Community School CorporationStudents at Culver Community Schools who are struggling with certain classes are getting help this week. The spring intercession period is now underway at many schools in the area, including Culver Community Schools.

However, it was a little bit of a challenge for Culver Schools to get to this point. Former Superintendent Vicki McGuire asked the school board in December to eliminate the spring intercession, after the corporation used up all the money it had budgeted for remediation on the first intercession held in October.

Instead, school officials were able to put together a scaled-back plan to provide help for some of the students who need it most. The finishing touches were put on that plan Monday, when Interim Superintendent Chuck Kitchell asked the school board to approve the transportation arrangements for students attending intercession, “Intercession’s going on this week and we’ve had to put five drivers on the road, so we’re just looking for approval of those drivers for the four days that they’ll be picking up students – actually, four half-days. We run a route in the morning, and then we run a route again at about 12 o’clock after lunch has been served.”

The board approved the list of bus drivers unanimously. A list of five teachers for the intercession period had been approved by school board members last month. Kitchell said that allows the corporation to give help to 40 elementary school students, and 43 students at the middle/high school level.

This school year has been the first for the intercession periods. It was one of the features added as part of the switch to the balanced calendar.
