Federal and State Income Taxes Due Today

Federal and state income taxes are due today. Hoosiers who are unable to pay must file an extension using form IT-9 in order to avoid penalties. Estimated payments are also due today. Visit www.in.gov/dor for more information about Indiana income tax filing.

The IRS anticipates more than 5 million returns will be filed at the very last minute.

Taxpayers who need more time can file an extension. Doing so will push their filing deadline out to Oct. 17, 2016 and eliminate a late filing penalty. In order to get an extension, taxpayers must estimate their tax liability and pay any estimated amount due.

The easiest way to request an extension is to visit www.irs.gov and click the free file link at the top of the page.
