Rep. Dermody Looks to Add Protections to Daily Fantasy Sports in Indiana

DermodyThe legalization and regulation of daily fantasy sports in Indiana has crossed a hurdle in the Indiana House.

State Representative Tom Dermody of LaPorte co-sponsored the legislation – which passed out of the Indiana House Public Policy Committee this week. He says the increased popularity of fantasy sports prompted him to consider a balance between the 1-million Hoosiers participating and ensuring proper protections are in place.

Dermody chairs the Public Policy Committee. Under the bill language, regulations would be established banning daily fantasy sports employees and their families from playing. Professional athletes would be disallowed from playing as well. Age limitations would also be in place – which would disallow individuals under the age of 18 from playing.

After receiving support on a 12-1 vote in committee, the bill now heads to the House Ways and Means committee for further consideration.
