Winamac Council Votes Against Urban Chicken Ordinance

ChickenChickens will not be coming to the Town of Winamac in the near future. The Town Council narrowly defeated an ordinance Monday that would have let residents raise poultry in the town for a one-year trial period.

Council member Dan Vanaman voted for the measure, on the condition that neighbors would be consulted before residents were granted permits. Council Vice-President Tom Murray, however, voiced concerns about disease, noting that chickens had been banned from the 4-H Fair for that reason. Council President Kenneth McFarland had previously spoken with officials from eight other area communities, and none of them recommended allowing chickens within city limits.

The Winamac Town Council voted against the measure, by a vote of three-to-two.
