Storms Leave REMC, NIPSCO Customers in the Dark

A transmission outage at two Kankakee Valley REMC substations in Starke County has thousands of customers in the dark. Spokeswoman Amanda Steeb says a combination of ice and wind this morning has caused numerous broken poles and downed power lines. She reminds everyone to stay clear of downed lines and to treat them as though they are energized. No restoration time is available. More than 3,100 members are without power.

NIPSCO is also reporting more than 10,000 customers throughout northern Indiana without power due to a combination of freezing rain, low temperatures and high winds. Officials say a combination of freezing rain, low temperatures and high winds are to blame. Weather conditions have resulted in downed power lines being weighted down by ice. Additionally slick roadways have caused vehicles to slide into utility poles across the area.

NIPSCO crews are working to restore power to existing customers and responding to new outages. No restoration times are available at this time. Visit http://www.nipscooutages.com/WSSNisourceOutageMap/outagemap.html?action=city&reloaded=true for up-to-date information.
